Thought I would share this bit of information for other blinders who are thinking about joining the exodus from CA. I moved to Colorado and found out that U-haul and Budget trucks are price gouging the rental truck market right now. It seems to be a combination of taking advantage of a hot market and the fact that there are no trucks left in California b/c so many people are leaving. I think these companies are now baking in the cost to have an employee drive these trucks empty TO California so customers can then use them to move. For reference, renting a 20' truck from Bay Area to Colorado was priced at ~$6,500 vs. say Nashville to Colorado at ~$1,500. I ended up renting a truck from Reno and saving myself $4,500 by driving that extra 3 hours both ways to get my stuff. Anyone else have crazy stories about this? #wfh #california #exodus #remotework
It sure sucks that it got so expensive to leave California. The reason for this is that more people use UHauls to leave California than to come to the state. By charging higher prices the Californian UHaul stations try to compensate for the fact that you take one of the Vans and move it to a different station instead of bringing it back to the original one. This way they have one less vehicle to rent to customers reducing that stations income. The lack of UHaul then increases the price for out if state drives. #SupplyAndDemand
Shouldnt they just pay if you agree to use Uhaul to move to california?
There are other options like pods move
Buy a used utility trailer on Craigslist, and add a tow receiver to your car (it’s extremely easy to DIY this, go to etrailer.com). Make sure that your car’s towing capacity and the trailer match up, and, more important- pack the wheel bearings before your trip. Go to your destination and sell the trailer on Craigslist after your move.
Makes me just want to throw all my shit on the CA streets and say fuck you.
Even leaving Cali is expensive. LMAO. Made my day
