Hi, i have 3 yoe. Recently got one of FAANG SDE1 offer, but rejected by rest FAANG i interviewed. im going to take the offer because even if it is SDE1, it pays better than current job and likely to get promoted in a year. TC around 180k. Does the TC change as i get promoted SDE2? Of course I guess base will go up, but any effects on Signon bonus or RSU units? Thanks in advance
Never heard of such thing. RSU and signon needed to lure people in. Once you are in - you are in, why increase your stock?
You’re obviously not a SWE. I’ve gotten RSUs every year since starting (sometimes up to $50,000 worth). I definitely got RSUs at promotions.
I am obviously an SWE ... at Microsoft. I dont know if you’ve heard, but people here haven’t heard of refreshers. Tbh, yeah you get stocks every year, but I wouldnt even bother to call it RSU, its peanuts
Base always increases. At most companies you also get stock refreshers every year for performance as well as for promotion. Heres my TC progression: YOE: 3 Year 1: 110 base, 20k stock per year, 12% bonus. TC 140 Year 2: SE2 promotion. 128 base, 40k stock/year, 12% bonus. TC 180 Year 3: no promotion. 132 base, 50k stock/year. 12% bonus. TC 200 At the start of year 3, I left TripAdvisor for FB and this is where I am now. Level E4. 165 base, 90k stock/year, 10%bonus. TC 270. I've heard FB refreshers are good as well so let's see how much this increases. Takeaway: Both stock and base will rise every year if you perform well. But your biggest jump will be when you switch jobs.

Usually promotions come with RSU grants, they come from different pool. So, you will get your RSU for promotion and RSU for performance.
So I’m assuming you got amazon?
I think only Amazon and MS use SDE as title... Facebook use rank directly (E3, 4, 5) Apple external title is just Software Engineer without level. Netflix has only senior engineers Google uses SWE
Microsoft uses SWE not SDE.
Google / fb have good refreshers, but even there you will have a hard time keeping up with the TC of people hired fresh into your level when you are promoted. Microsoft... Just forget it in most cases. Amazon, it depends on the org. Your best strategy imo is to get promoted once, then move to a different FAANG for the same or one higher level. This is the only way to get top TC for a given level at FAANGs
The best way to bump up your TC is to change a job. Easy like this. Otherwise you'll be the subject to 3-5% annual humiliating raises.

Assuming this is Amazon, you’re at the top of the bar for SDE1. You’re probably not going to make much more unless you get promoted.
What about after promotion?
SDE2 range is like $190k-$250k (add 10% for SF/NYC)
