at negotiation, should you tell the recruiters the details about your cometing offers - company name and numbers?
Definitely! If you want them to match.. at the start of negotiations I was pretty reticent about my other offers and when I realized things are not turning in my favor I had to reveal all the details. And guess what they did not believe at that instant (din say straight to my face but I felt like). To convince I had to send screenshots of a couple of my offers to prove myself. Then there was an instant bump. Note: this is all after on-sites and after/during verbal stage.
my thinking was to be honest. but they will turn the table over
i have been open & honest with all recruiters regarding my other interviews, the dates they are happening, and the companies they are with. i feel that openness & honesty in ALL my dealings is fair, respectful, professional, and reflects well on me. it just so happens that this is also in your strategic best interest. (make everyone know upfront that they are competing for you. 😏) after that, i feel like the math here is pretty straightforward: 1. everyone is on hold/standby until all interviews are complete and offers are on table. 2. deal with your preferred/favorite/most strategic or satisfying place to work first. remember that this is about YOU getting what's best for YOU, which includes not just TC, but cool coworkers, a good boss, healthy company culture, PTO, flexible schedule, interesting work, longterm growth potential, shortest commute, etc etc. 3. if your #1 is the highest offer --> take it. 4. if u hv competing offers that are only slightly higher --> ask if there's any room to negotiate, but think twice about pushing too hard. remember that they can rescind an offer at any time if they get bad juju from you. 5. if u hv competing offers that are WAAAY higher --> ask if there's any room to negotiate and if they are interested to see your other offers. put the numbers on the table and just BE HONEST: "this is my #1 place i want to work, but given the size of this compensation gap, i'm really struggling with the decision." they will probably move. if they dont, you can say you are "going to accept one of the other offers unless company #1 can match it or at least come close to matching it." but be prepared to walk away! it is appropriate to disclose company names, but i do not think it is appropriate to disclose the names & contact info of individual recruiters unless a) someone asks for it and b) you have the other person's permission to disclose their info.
I once received an offer that was actually very high for my experience at the time. But "always negotiate", right? So I told them I couldn't decide at that moment, needed more time, and that I was in the process with other companies as well. I told them that if they wanted me to sign the offer right then, they needed to bump the yearly TC. When they asked what I was looking for, I asked for double the stock and triple the bonus. The recruiter was very receptive, and I ended up with double bonus, almost double stock, and a small salary bump, which bumped T/C by about 20%. My point being, I was completely honest. I asked for what I wanted, and made it clear I was very interested in the team I was joining but wasn't ready to make the decision yet, and they worked with me. I could have screwed it up by faking other offers but I didn't. Always be honest.
