story time: i quit my first software engineering job after 9 months because my startup was having signs of failure (massive 20% layoff, the new talent is really bad, too many technical problems that management and product can’t wrap their heads around, funding running low, severely missed revenue projections). i wanted to quit early so i can use the next 4 months to study ML courses and review my old notes because i want to repivot my career and also to do a bunch of leetcode QUESTION: how do i talk about this in interviews and is this going to be a major red flag? my background: i majored in EE with a focus on ML at a top school, but got my first job as a SWE to bridge my software skills gap... i’ve been getting call backs for ML interviews from big companies, i just need to prep cause it’s been a while since i thought of ML topics and i really want to do well in my interviews TC: 83k — also another reason why i yeeted lol
Would have been better to just coast and study and let them fire you if it came to it. But not insurmountable, hiring managers know that startups are closing shop left and right and that new grads are usually the first in line to get laid off.
No
what lol
It won't. No worries, ask for your old job back and quiet quit
Nice.
This is the kind of thing that seems like a huge deal at the time but really it's whatever, no one cares. You were at a startup, say it went under, you got laid off, the work wasn't what you were told it was going to be etc. Some people will turn their nose up and call you a job hopper, but most people won't care, especially if you have hard skills, which it sounds like you do
It is always easier to get a job when you have a job, particularly in a difficult job market
try this: “i wanted to quit early so i can use the next 4 months to study ML courses and review my old notes because i want to repivot my career and also to do a bunch of leetcode”
Just say startup failed and laid you off. Don’t say you quit…makes you look like a quitter. ML is taught in EE programs?
wouldn’t they find out i quit in the background check lol
Unlikely. They usually just confirm dates of employment.
