Hi, I'm working on my resume and wondering if my resume is interview-worthy because I have been applying to SWE/SWE2 positions and only ever received interviews from LinkedIn, amazon, and Goldman Sachs. LinkedIn and Amazon had to pull back because they found more experienced candidates better suited to the roles. Please critique my resume and recommend if anything needs to be changed :) Thanks a ton! TC: 0 laid off
Yea good point, how did ya do so much in 1 month? Also why the shorts stints? Seems like you got let go and laid off from every job after the first one
Well, I quit the second job to enroll in a master's program and I got laid off from Flexport :/ As to how I did so much in 1 month, I have been putting in 70-80 hours every week since they're a pre-seed startup and they needed the platform out for the pilot program (it’s not structured like your typical company, no unit/integration tests, no QA, did not set up sentry, etc). Just building the MVP as quickly as possible
Summary missing
I have heard mixed reviews about this, Do recruiters actually care about summaries? I omitted it because I already took off accomplishments and internships because there wasn't enough space :/
Take out fluff word like “crucial”. Also it looks like font is not the same. Look at 2nd job first bullet
For sure!
Resume looks OK but I would add back the summary. And to piggyback off earlier responses, I would trim down the bullet points in your most recent role… You were only there a month maybe two by the time of this message but still, I would trim it down. If you are having trouble with getting an interview, how many positions are you applying to on a weekly basis? What type of roles? When you apply do you just add your résumé or do you add a cover letter and provide more information about the projects you worked on including the ones during your masters course. Honestly, I’m not a fan of cover letters and I have been in talent acquisition for 20 years, but might look to change things up. With the job market the way it is it’s all about how marketable you are.
Totally! I’m targeting SWE2 roles and I have been applying to roughly 30 companies each week! I didn’t add any cover letters because they’re super time consuming and people can tell something written by chatgpt easily. I think I might be having trouble because I do need visa sponsorship lol! Thanks a ton for your recommendations on the resume! I’ll make those changes :)
Toss
I would really appreciate your feedback on why it’s a toss 🥹
You need to cut half the content. The point isn't to be exhaustive but to highlight your wins and interface that with your relevant tooling. Summaries are a complete waste so don't listen to above. A pseudo technical person needs to understand you're skilled within 5-10 seconds of reading this. Focus!
Thanks for the advice! I know I might be pushing it but can you give me an example of what needs to go?
Most of your most recent experience can go. In 5-10s, a recruiter will only glance at a few random bullet points (2-3) before they make an initial read. You need to ensure that, no matter what bullets they ingest, they're impressed. No need to be exhaustive or overly technical.
You're saying a lot of nothing. - Education move to top, above Experience - Remove job locations - Remove "contract" or "full-time" - Remove "Data platform", unless part of title - Project stays at bottom
Sounds good! Thanks
Remove that filthy t3 Indian degree
Would I have a better chance by removing it?
Nothing you can change about this, but I usually pass on resumes with numerous short stints. You haven’t worked anywhere for longer than a year.
It kinda sorta happened 😞 jump shipped from my first job for higher salary, dropped out of second job to pursue masters and then got laid off from flexport 🥹
As a person, I empathize and get it. As a hiring manager, those are red flags for me, and in this market it’s just not worth the risk. Wish you luck though! Try to stick it out at your next job for three or more years at least. Two years would be bare minimum.
Within one month you did so much ah? In your current position?
Yup! It's not much, unfortunately. I have been working 70-80 hour weeks since it is a preseed startup and they needed their product out for the pilot program
TBH it looks very fishy when someone sees it for the first time, keep a few points for now and rest for the interview.
