I need some advice on which career path to switch to because seeing the current job market conditions and trend, I’m not sure which track to pick and invest my time into. Background: I have some experience in Java and Ruby on Rails and couple of years back since Business Intelligence field was so hot I got into Business Intelligence Analyst role and it’s been 6 six years now but I have always felt stuck and wanting to go back to coding. In 2016 I self taught myself Swift and also published an app in the App Store but somehow lost the momentum. Then pandemic came and I thought it’s better to stick to my current job and maybe later explore my options. Now I do wanna start exploring but tech world has changed so much in 6yrs. So I did some research and found two courses which can initially help me get back into coding and learning phase. IOS Stanford - cs193p 100 Days of Swift - Hacking With Swift Python Web Development: Harvard - cs50 If I go for iOS I feel I’ll be restricting myself and python I know is used more in bi and data engineering so not sure how easy or difficult it’ll be to get into a junior developer role. Any suggestions or has anyone been in the same boat or switching careers.
Kind of stuck in a similar place. I find apps more interesting and I want to work for apple again one day so I’m strongly considering doing the meta iOS developer certificate but idk if I’m limiting myself my going into iOS into dead of general swe. I really hate backend and not interested and front end is ok but it doesn’t excite me. I’ve also just considered UX but idk how to pivot to that. What did you end up going with?

Honestly, I find mobile dev positions are easier to land bc they are weighted more on building an app. Less leetcode (only like one round). So imo iOS is the way to go. If you can stomach it, you can learn Android with Java. Yes Kotlin is the new language for Android, but most companies still accept Java. As an added bonus you can learn Java backend programming without too much more effort. Java is not sexy, but it gets the job done with no gotchas
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this! Yeah even I was thinking of going for IOS but what do yo think about the job market for entry level or junior developer roles rn with all the lay offs and everything happening
I think there are enry level positions for mobile. Not as much as backend. But seems like with backend the actual stack you used matters. If that's the case mobile wins out and easier to land
