I guess the decision to kill it makes sense now that there's been little mention of it since the announcement. For users who only play drm-free mp3's, however, Goog Music remained the best option for keeping the library sync'ed among all devices (iPhone is the only Apple device I use). I see that the move to Youtube Music includes charging for playing in the background so it's a downgrade / upsell. If you are a current user, what will you move to once they kill it? YT Music and pay for what Music currently offers for free (lmao)? Vox? Something else?
