got a request to interview with Udacity and i was going to schedule it but after looking at their glassdoor reviews , it seems like a nightmare to work at. is working at Udacity really as bad as the reviews are saying? TC: $85k/1.5 YOE
I think their addressable market is huge and different players are taking different GTM approach - Udacity is evolving into a tech vocational center, albeit an expensive one. If people start valuing nano degrees same way that people value Harvard or Wharton degrees - then they have potential. Also, like your Facebook feed or Netflix, content is king in MooCs. They need to constantly predict learning trends, invest in developing & scaling content and market it heavily to become profitable. Layoffs are reorgs are inefficient ways to cut costs and they signal bad strategy and lack of alignment on vision.
You have a valid point and I appreciate your insight! (No sarcasm intended)
Stay away
In the last 18 months all the major ed-tech companies (private and public) have had mgmt changes - ceo change at Udacity, Coursera, Udemy and exec changes at 2U and Pluralsight (look at the stock price). For Udacity 2 major changes resulted in layoffs: 1. content made faster and cheaper 2. More growth in enterprise than consumer. Big picture the market is big and rev is in the $75-100m range. There are press releases with more numbers.
Heard Udemy is looking for buyer. Has contacted Udacity once.
Op, do you have any new insights ? Did you interview with them ?
No new insights, took the advice here and decided to just ignore the request. I also just started a new job and moved so I wouldnāt be in a position to move coasts anytime soon.
I interviewed with them recently. I heard the hiring manager jumped ship and an internal team member told me itās a complete shit show and to not even bother
Yikes!! I wanted to believe that it was past the layoffs and is smooth sailing now.
Any of you guys joined udacity? I have a interview with them soon.

How good is your workplace ? Compare and go accordingly - good and bad is relative
I guess I was considering bad the fact that employees were leaving essay length bad reviews about working there mentioning topics such as frequent layoffs, a culture of fear, doing things quickly instead of properly and whatnot.
Well to some extent it is true , but which startup doesnāt act like that :)
