Working at Micro Center as a Service Technician. Applying to other entry level IT positions in San Diego.

What is an ideal total comp I should expect? I have an interview next week and qualifications I have are A+ and about 1.5 years of technical experience which includes troubleshooting software/hardware, communicating with customers and including detailed notes on ticketing systems... Would ideally like more experience in Active Directory and more software related issues. Currently a student working on my bachelors for Comp Sci. #it #interview

You’ll be making like 20 dollars an hour give or take a few dollars likely in a contractor role. For a support role, ymmv, but some companies will mostly care about how good you are with people and that you have a basic knowledge. However, what people consider “basic” is very subjective.

20-30 an hour. When I was 15 I started working at Geek Squad in troubleshooting/repair, was good with customers so started ‘selling’ the black tie solutions, then I started applying at small <50 person companies to do their desk side support. Ended up landing an entry level gig for a 40 person small biz, by the time I was done there I was the system admin. Leveraged that experience to get into a staff aug company going from client to client doing system/network support. Grinding for a few years paid off and landed me a senior system admin job at a 200+ person company. I didn’t go to college but did do my ccna. Just keep grinding, learning everything you can and make sure that with every role you pursue is a step up and towards your ultimate goal. I haven’t been in IT for almost a decade now, but this worked for me. If I were to do it all again I’d be focusing on security.
