Tech is dead. Choose a different career
after depressive months of rejection and over 500 applications, i finally made it. i received offers from facebook and amazon last week. yoe: 6 facebook: numbers no longer valid amazon: no numbers yet, but sde2 level. How do i proceed with negotiations? fb seems a bit low. can also Pm. also, which one should i pick?
How many LC did you do?
400
I slowly started in December and ramped up to doing it all day. For e5, you’ll need system design as well
Fb bonus is 15% at E5 for MA. If you can't get MA you have other problems to worry about then your bonus.
MA? Sorry I rechecked my numbers. My minimum is 15 percent tho the ceiling seems high
Meet all gets you 15% and MA is the minimum for not being pip'd. Recruiters don't tell you the lower ratings to not freak you out. :)
How did u prep for system design?
Grokking was terrible. High scalability, company blogs, talks were great. Reading white papers and the big books is really nice. I can not recommend most Youtubers. Tushar Roy and Gaurav sen were not good. Mocking is key. If you can’t explain the concepts to a five year old, you don’t understand it enough. Make sure you hit all of your points and be able to explain trade offs for everything you do.
I would up the amount of mocking till final interview date.
FB offer is decent, looks like they put in low to mid of E5. To bump the RSU, u need competing offers. And your company might have also didn’t help. I m hearing it for the first time
And you have only 6 yoe, that might have played a role as well
I was supposed to interview for e4 but then it froze. So I was left with interviewing for e5
You got incredibly lucky OP. Job market is fierce. No negotiation without competing offers.
Thank you. I feel grateful to the Blind community for everything. Expect a detailed guide soon
just make sure you don't leak questions. not worth losing a job over. and welcome
get amazon’s number then negotiate with facebook. though i guess sde2 number would be way less than e5. so DONT tell facebook’ recruiter your level and number at amazon
How do you do 500 applications and end up with offers for just these two and not random companies?
I applied during corona. So I spammed angel and hacker news. A lot of the earlier ones reneged on offers, froze halfway through, and some of them I was quite rusty in. I would say I received less interviews than usual from these applications. But for each interview I tried to reflect on what I did well and poorly. I laugh at one SD for Design Venmo when I couldn’t even really explain consistency well.
I also got rejected by countless of companies and got offer from Amazon and FB pre-covid. There was an interview where the CTO asked me what is the default scope in Spring and I said I don't know then rejection lol.
That’s lowish for FB E5. TC could be around 350. They can do 190 for base. There’s a big range for RSUs at E5. FB also has signing bonuses up to 100K.
What’s the max u saw for E5 RSU
OP also has 6 YOE, and initially was interviewing for e4 before e4 got hiring freeze and they bumped his level to e5 interview. So maybe they are offering bottom of e5 band? In any case, definitely negotiate but don't walk away from FB offer if they won't budge.
TLDR: I would pick FB. It's hard to negotiate though. I tried to negotiate without competing offer but I failed. You can get up to 100k signing bonus. I even know an E4 offer with 100k signon. E5 is sweet spot at FB, making good money and much less pressure than E6. E4 will have to work like E5 or pip. On the other hand, SDE2 is the worst at Amazon. Low pay, you have to work hard if you want to get promotion. SDE3 at Amazon in general code very little because writing design docs and going to meeting consume all of their time. You will be lucky to see a smart SDE1, the bar is quite low. So SDE2 will have to write most of the code, and in order to show that you perform at SDE3, write a lot of design docs too. Of course, you can delegate work to other people and take credit etc.. I don't want to go further lol. There are plus side of Amazon as well. Amazon works slower than FB so you will get some life. It's good if you have kids and just want to rest and vest. Code base at Amazon is in general cleaner than at FB. In Amazon, you will have chance to work on bigger feature than in FB. Amazon is a great place to fail and learn. Lastly, I think there are bright people in both company and smart people at FB are not smarter than those who are in Amazon. I think you will enjoy working with them.
Why is dont negotiate an option?
It was supposed to be a dry joke, but A couple of people already checked the box.
People think that negotiation is risky and they're wrong. Get numbers from Amazon and leverage those if they're higher. Don't just look at salary, look at total comp. Keep in mind you're not negotiating against the company, you're negotiating against a recruiter who also wants to get paid more for the work they're doing so they're empathetic and loose nothing by giving you a higher TC. Be respectful, see if you can eek out a few % more and you'll be fine
