After 14 years at Microsoft I turned in my resignation with 3.5 weeks of notice. No big deal. I was taught when I was younger it was classy. That it allows for a smooth transition and it’s the last thing people remember. I had some key turnovers I wanted to take care of. Again trying to do the right thing I’m going to Amazon on Aug 1. My manager naturally said here is your walking papers and out. I said that there are a few loose ends I should tie up. Nope. Ok. What I didn’t expect is that she changed my exit date without me knowing to two weeks earlier. Why? Because she is sore. But what it did to me was mess up my healthcare coverage for two lousy weeks. Can I do cobra. Yes. Is it a pain. Yes. Will I be fine? Yes. But it’s the last thing I remember now about what was a really good run. Anyway here is a lesson I learned. For a brief moment I forgot that you do not matter to the company. Your achievements do not matter. What you did for your team did not matter and being classy with a handshake and well wishes is dead. If you get a new job. Do what is right for you. Quit 1 day before your new role because it’s the safest thing for you. Especially today. I wish it wasn’t. So thank you blind for allowing me a quick vent. Usually if you are going to competitor they make you out even in one day , does not matter how best you were. It's about company IP at that time
Agreed. Next time if you want to give notice - don't flaunt where you are going. Just tell whomever is asking respectfully you'd like to keep it private.
If you dont say they assume its a competitor and walk you out. So no difference there
You didn't cc hr?
+ 1. Always cc HR on notices. Generally there will be a policy to pay out your notice (or two weeks of a notice) if they ask you to relinquish access ahead. OP did the “right thing” by giving notice and if you have it in email to your boss, I’d suggest you question the change with HR. If only to save the insurance headache.
Yea, in CA isn't there a law that they must pay you for the remainder of your notice? Can send you home but you still get paid
Whats the breakdown of tc? R u manager of director? How were interviews
Feel free to pm for details. Happy to provide
L7 in amazon is senior managers. Director is l8 and above
The she key is broken on many keyboards even when it's clearly indicated in original post.
That is standard risk mitigation policy when departing to a competitor. Tenure does not factor into this at all, you get an automatic walk out and 2 weeks of garden leave in the US.
I'm also pretty sure that you also get health insurance coverage through the end of the month. At Microsoft it's company policy to get an automatic walk-out the moment you give notice that you're leaving for a competitor. I used this to get out immediately (I stayed until after I confirmed my vest) so I could take more time off in-between jobs. In my case, my manager was nice enough to keep my on the books for 2 weeks (paid+benefits), something I didn't expect or ask for. That's why, in my opinion, loyalty is earned by managers, not companies. It's slowly earned but can be quickly burned.
I have moved from FAANG to FAANG two times and I wasn’t walked out. Gave 3+ weeks of notice both times. Maybe I wasn’t working on projects critical enough 🤷♂️
Congrats. Sorry you forgot the rules of engagement
What is the rules of engagement?
Every person for themselves 😀
2 weeks notice on either side, isn’t it?
Nah
You worked for 14 years and can do KT in 3.5 weeks of all the work?? I would have felt mid life crisis.
If you have good documentation you can do it in 2 weeks lol
Are you new to the industry? You think op accumulated 14 years of work on the same exact team and that all that work is all in production with no single soul having any knowledge of all the systems with 0 documentation?
Depends on the manger. Sandy company different story; I gave my two weeks notice to my manager, who told me that your access will be revoked in three days so let us keep this between us for ten days (there wasn’t much knowledge transfer needed). Then at a later point, due to change in my situation, I needed to move my last date forward. My manager worked with hr to get my last date extended.
This
This is Gem of manager
That's a nice looking TC
wonder why this is flagged
