Recently got very similar offers from these 2 companies and I am unable to make a decision. Epic L5 : 235K base plus discretionary bonus (which ofcourse can be 0 if company wants) Bloomberg : Senior SWE TC : 250k all cash including bonus Things of concern : How is the gaming industry in general? Is it a good step forward to enter into the gaming industry? Or Is it better to enter into the financial industry which might open doors for me for hedge funds later down the line. Current TC 220k : yoe 9.5
Isn’t Epic a healthcare company?
Correct, but OP is talking about Epic Games.
They have a crazy campus lol like Disneyland https://www.epic.com/visiting/
9.5 YoE but 220k at Google? Even with being in a LCOL and coasting as L4 it shouldn't be this. For the offers- This is effectively only a 10% bump, not that great tbh. Did you already negotiate? You must really wanna get out of G (understandable in the current climate). I'd pick Bloomberg. Also, make this a poll.
Even if Epic with the target bonus comes out slightly ahead, would you run yourself into the ground for that incremental TC?
That is my concern. The only thing that bothers me with Bloomberg is getting a senior role and then where do u progress from there on?? There is no ladder to progress upon!! Let me know if my assumption here is incorrect.
If you don't take the TL/management path, there are still ways to increase your TC without any title change, partake to guilds, becoming a tech specialist who other teams can refer to, overall having a significant impact will put you above and you'll be rewarded accordingly. Seniors with comp is going from 220 to 400 (above you'd need to be pretty exceptional like staff in FAANG). There's room for growth and we're working on getting a system to officialize distinction between I without falling into the title trap. Also note than many TLs still code 50% of their time even some managers (above TL or TLs) are still contributing a lot
Epic. Work on fun stuff while you can. Save Bloomberg for boomers.
You get to work on ton of cool stuff at Epic, very motivating. WLB is good in my experience. And in terms of TC, if Epic is 235 base and 250 at Bloomberg is including bonuses, then I’d consider Epic to be the better offer. Bonuses are tied to your performance so amounts do vary, but they are pretty decently sized at this level. I’d say from 60 to 250 a year depending on performance at this level. Did you ask the recruiter if they could give you some numbers?
60 to 250k?? Isn’t that like 100% of the bonus?? Do you really get that? Recruiter is not giving me any numbers on the bonus side. From what I have read, epic had reduced the bonuses overall. How is that going?
These numbers for bonuses are accurate.
Bloomberg does little to open doors for hedge funds. But it’s certainly more steady than gaming industry. North Carolina is certainly less HCOL than NYC, so your money would go farther with epic. Also interesting that through the grapevine, we aren’t doing any senior hires right now.
Isn’t Epic also offering stock options on top of the base pay, or what you have posted also includes the stock options (or RSUs) as well?
SWE II are at almost $300k at Meta, Amazon etc. Do with this info what you may. To answer your original question, go Bloomberg.
This is outside US, hence the salaries are not that much here.
Are you in Canada?
