Signed a contract for a new build. California requires that all new builds have solar. The builder, which I will keep anonymous (but let’s call it Troll Brothers), forces you to choose between two options from SunPower: 1) Buy 6kW system for ~36K (gets tax incentive) 2) Lease the system, over $200/mo for 20 years! This seems very overpriced. I’m not even considering that lease. For the purchase option, it also feels like a rip off, Tesla offers more capacity for half of that price. Am I missing something? Is this a total rip off? Any experience with this system? TC: 550k
What do you see Tesla offers half price with more capacity ? Are you talking about 8.16kw it costs 18k for solar but you pay 17 k for Powerwalls rights ? So total cost is 35k not half
I missed the powerwalls part. I don’t feel that bad then
buy, no question. because reselling your house with the encumbrance will be bad
If you are shelling 35K, i’d recommend buying. Dont lease, if you plan to sell/rent house within 5 years.

I would say, ask them to fuck off. Then go with PPA(power purchase agreement) which is a lease with SunRun. I can refer you if you’d like. You’ll get 500$ back. For my 6.5KW system, it is 62$/month, with an option to purchase after 5/10/15. It would have cost me 18K-20K to purchase the system with them when it was new along with install and permits. I got mine under lease last year.
I would love to do that, however I do need to choose one of the options in order to close on the home, it’s total BS. I still want the home despite they are f***ing me over on that one.
Lol, then they are going to milk you as much as possible. Curious as to why you have to opt-in in either for closing. Is this a new law or something?
