Hi blind / I'm not part of the mass tech layoffs, but dotdash meredith isn't doing well either and I know people who take seasonal retail jobs working on commission while working corporate but because most tech companies or corporations aren't hiring - I was wondering how does it make me look to get into retail full time after working corporate for 6+ years? Figured I'd use retail to make ends meet and freelance and build a business. As opposed to taking the corporate stress but IS IT A MISTAKE? Edit: I'm no longer at Dotdash but was laid off due to department changes. The retail job I'm looking at is commission based.
You do you. Just keep your eyes open and learn. Good luck dot dash
Thank you - appreciate it
What the fuck is wrong with your head?
You're what's wrong with the world
Yeah, sounds like a great idea to quit a $50/hour corporate job and go work at retail at $15/hour!
I assume you don't read. It's a commission based job. I could make up my corporate salary especially during this holiday season.
High end sales over the holidays sound like it could be lucrative, if the buyers are there. And I think the soft skills you will hone there will be super valuable as real world leadership experience. Compare that skill set to the standard Blind leetcoding techminion complaining about “politics”, you are much better prepared for working with other human beings and using influence and relationships to build success.
I think it’ll make you more versatile, I think you’ll gain skills you never would working in corporate tech, and I think you’ll have some pretty good stories to share in interviews if you want to come back. I also think companies will understand the factors which contributed towards you making this (possibly temporary) pivot into retail. Sure, some might turn their nose up at someone with Zumiez as their most recent employer, but I wouldn’t put too much stock in it (or just omit it from resume and say you were trying to start a business for a couple years)
Byte, I appreciate the response and how thoughtful you were in addressing my concern. To clarify, I'm not making $15/hour at a Zumiez. I'm making commission at a high end retailer. But I just don't want to feel like I'm stepping down from a stable corporate career, but this beats waiting to find a new role in this economic state.
