Been at Apple for 6 yrs after phd. Evaluating Nvidia vs meta reality labs. I am passionate about AR/VR and think Meta would be super interesting in that regard, but also feel there is a lot of pressure there because the company future depends on it. I feel the Nvidia role is ambiguous and not super interesting to me but could be a company where I can learn a lot in a different culture/field. Also curious if it's easy to move around in Nvidia and learn different things. Can y'all help me with the following: - Any thoughts on WLB in these orgs? I have a 2 year old and another on the way so want to make sure I don't burn out and can set boundaries without risking pip - In both companies, how hard is it to move around and keep learning? - What exactly is solutions engineering? Is that interesting from a technical standpoint still? - Thoughts on company future outlook? - Thoughts on commuting? I'm in San Jose so Nvidia remote/Santa Clara office feels way more convenient than Meta RTO and Burlingame/Sunnyvale commute #arvr #mrl #nv #av #simulation
AV=Adult video? If yes, definitely pick that
LOL
TC?
people shit on AV in internal blind all the time
Why? Just curious.
Not clear. general impression i get is that people are bot happy with the av leadership and products and overall directions. AV complaints were regular until recently. But i think the av leadership changed and i see less complaints. on the flip side, av seems to get great promotions/titles and pay.
I am in reality labs. My team was supposed to work on newer versions of avatars but managers pivoted to something else this year. Work at meta should be super interesting and super stressful at the same time
Can you elaborate any more on the pivot? Stressful == long hours? I don't mind fast paced environments as long as people/managers are good to work with.
Also, do you know how flexible RTO is? Are they pushing it hard?
Depends on what you enjoy working on. Work: Solution engineers usually take existing technology and create a prototype/demo to sell to customers. You might not work on actually pushing the technology forward. If I am right, as AV solutions engineer you might work on creating demo applications for car companies to sell NVDIA's AV technology. Just create the prototype and your job will be done. It won't matter if the customer ends up buying it or not. Reality Labs on the other hand is a shipping product with customers using it daily. They are pushing the technology forward so might get to work on something cutting edge while delivering it to millions of customers. A huge learning opportunity IMO. WLB: NVDIA might be a winner here but that might come with slow promotions. Meta will be fast paced and fast promo. Stock price: Both are at an ATH right now and both have similar potential IMO over 2-5 year horizon.
I think this matches up with what my hunch is. I definitely love the AR/XR industry more. If WLB is similar in either case I'd prefer the passion.
Meta for passion and NVIDIA for better WLB
Both fields (AV, AR/VR) are evolving quickly, so don’t expect WLB in either company. Solutions engineering involve more prototyping, xfn collab, and customer engagements that you can’t easily get out of. Work with auto customers in Europe/Japan/China? Expect regular early morning and evening calls. As IC4, you’re expected to lead these efforts. Overall compared to a regular engineering role, it’s more breadth, higher visibility, and more emphasis on soft skills. NVIDIA managers have the power to approve/block internal transfer, so it depends. Some managers are recommending RTO, but not a company policy. Times are good for us, why rock the boat? But hard to say for the future.
Appreciate this insight.
It's incredible that you're in a position to choose between two incredible offers. I'm certain you will succeed wherever you decide to go.

What happens when most of your team is Indian?
Commute to Burlingame 3 days a week will be my deal breaker. You’ll be burned out in no time.
Ya I heard they may have a Sunnyvale office. Also not sure how hard they are pushing RTO vs allowing more flexibility.
