Any civil engineers out here who successfully managed to make a switch from civil infrastructure design/engineering/consulting companies to SAAS companies like Autodesk, Bentley systems, Trimble, etc? I have 4 yrs of experience in the AEC industry and am an expert user of many of the civil and structural design and engineering products that the above companies provide. I also have my PE license. I have been applying to positions such as customer success, product management, technical solutions exec, and similar roles but have had no luck for the past year. If there’s anyone here that could give me some advice on how to hone my skill sets for these roles and make the transition, I would greatly appreciate it. Or if there are other roles better suited for civil engineers going into these SAAS firms, I would like to hear about them as well. Location: USA YOE: 4 TC: $90k #autodesk #bentleysystems #trimble
I transitioned into a self driving tech company but that involved getting an MS in computer science 🥶
I’m open to doing a bootcamp but I don’t think I can afford a masters unfortunately. Did you switch into a role that requires a lot of comp sci knowledge? I was thinking to go into more customer facing roles like customer success or product management (not TPM) etc that would be less technical heavy since I have experience in project management through my current role
I switched into a data science role, so yeah pretty technical. The MS degree was only around $ 10k. For the type of roles you’re looking for you can probably just play up your consulting and project management experience on your resume.
Yep! Went from traffic engineering to product management at a traffic device company. Went from 110k as an EI to 145k total comp!

Dhruv Rathee speaks lies about Ch. Shivaji Maharaj
Is Saas a skill? Your skillset and the business model of a company are two completely separate things
I agree, however when I interview for companies who are following the SAAS model, they often ask if I’ve worked with such models, which is not the case when being a civil engineer doing design and engineering for infrastructure
