What are the salary ranges for experienced VP roles at Goldman Sachs? What about Tech Fellows or Senior Engineers? Is there an equivalent level at Goldman for Executive Director? From what I understand the next level above VP is MD, which seems like a big jump.

  • Probably 200 to 250k for ic. But tech is second class and eng will never get to md. Higher comp as you grind up through middle management. Be ready for lots of late night calls with Bangalore. 80hr weeks are the norm, everyone works weekends as well.

    • "Tech will never get to MD" - please stop spreading mis information. Half of Goldman is Technology btw and most number of promotions to MD are made in technology every year. 99.99 percentile cases people work 40-50 hours a week. Bangalore teams are mostly independent and on equal footing. Nobody works on weekends. 4 months of parental leave for the father, 6 months for the mother and many many other benefits. MD TC goes above 500k as base and 1M as bonus and highest concentration of MDs is in Tech. Please research.

    • Highest concentration of MD is definitely incorrect. The best groups have the highest MD to reports ratio. Think best IBD groups and MBD (private equity). Tech is on par, almost exactly, with ops. I analyzed this to death with another strat.

  • At VP level you can expect between 300-350. Just saw somebody who got hired less than year ago promoted to MD in tech. They work as IC though not doing any managerial tasks and you need to have 10-15 YOE to be considered for such positions. Having said that you don’t want to come to Goldman (or any finance related firms) from Google. It’s not about being second citizen at all, the difference is about the vision and priorities of people higher up that trickle down. Part of long hours in Goldman (weekend is not norm in my team btw) is the result of lack of proper investment in having right software tools. Most tools are some side project of people and due to lack of support it’s always flaky, thus wasting a lot of your time. The other issue with working at finance firms is the red tape, part of it due to being under regulation by government. For example if you work on front office, when you make changes you have to provide evidence and documentation that justify the code change which sometime is taking much more time than the actual change. This whole inefficiency and the red tape will burn you out.

  • Almost all leadership (and by leadership I mean actual decision making, not deciding on the code style guide) comes from the business side, or is hired externally. You are drinking too much kool aid.

    Of the places I've worked, it was the most self interested, political, and short sighted culture. Technology is a distinct second class within Goldman. Literally "fix my computer" level of respect within the firm.

    Of course it's a huge company. Experience may vary.

    Of all the banks I have worked at, GS’ engineers are most respected internally and externally. They form significant portion of leadership at GS. IMO, engineers had a better reign during Lloyd’s tenure. Not anymore. I might be wrong. Exception being Marcus.

    Pay varies depending on how far you are from the revenue stream. Quants and trading infra engineers get big chunk as they are closer to revenue. Middle office not as much.

    VP to MD as in any company depends on senior leadership and how it promotes next level. Some groups (i would say majority)it’s pure merit and talent. Some not so much.

  • @ruminate: To help you give some correct information

    1. Salary range is very wide for VPs, there are junior VPs who are more like team managers on the lower end and then there are Tech Fellows who are on the seniormost end. They are equivalent to Executive Directors and manage large functions within Technology space. You can research more about the pay on level.fyi, but for a tech fellow it is on the higher end of a VP salary range. The only change you may witness vs Google is that bonuses for us contribute to a large proportion of our pay.

    2. Next level from Tech Fellow is MD and base for minimum MDs in GS is 500k no matter where you are located, bonuses become bigger part at this stage. Basically the higher you go the more bonus will become a huge part of your pay sometimes 2x - 3x.

    15 yoe is common at MD stage.
