only certain salaried employees told to clock in?

myself and a member of my team were sent an email by HR, without our supervisor cc’d, telling us we were now required (after years at the company) to clock in and out. we frequently work off site and at industry events making this impossible. when we asked about it further, HR ignored our emails, and then we were told by the OWNER this was a new company wide policy and that every single person, salaried or not, had to. we asked around, and not a single other salaried employee (in a company with 1,000 employees) was told to do this. whats up with this and is there any recourse i have here? it seems to be targetting us in some way as they know its an impossible task.

I know, for sure. But is this illegal in anyway? To say it’s a company wide policy when it absolutely isn’t?

Why would it be illegal? They could require you to dance a jig before your shift and it wouldn’t be illegal.

Do you regularly work more than 40-hrs per week? If the company treats you like an hourly employee they may have to pay you like one. This could work in your favor, if you are already high hours.

In office more than 40 hours rarely- but in 2019 aren’t we all working on our phones 24/7? I take calls at 11pm at night on Tuesday’s and 8am on Saturdays.

Is this a contracting company such as Cognizant?

Sounds like an excellent case for malicious compliance.

What is their definition for clocking in? Do you fill something out online? Or do you have to physically drive to the office. Clock in and then drive offsite. Tell them that you plan to stick to your 8 hour day. So you will be in at X to clock in and this will lead you to getting offsite at Y and then you will leave early too to get back to clock out. They will not be able to find other tech workers will to work extra hours just to drive back and forth. I would also update your resume when they go batshit.
