Hi all, I was recently inpacted by Covid layoffs and I am switching industries and have a first round interview with FB for a product marketing role with a recruiter. How would you prepare for this and what types of questions do they ask? thank you!
What were you previously doing ?
I am a PMM. Recruiter phone call was 20 min and asked these questions: TMAY Why Facebook Why this role What’s your favorite Facebook product and why? How would you improve it
That's suspiciously easy sounding haha! Whats TC and what was your experience before? Never heard of a FB interview being that easy
Sounds like pm interview
Does FB hire people who answer honestly that they don’t use FB products in their day to day lives? No doubt I can learn about the value prop of the products/features, but my past interactions with FB and Google mktg interviews is that you need to fanboy the products.
Depends on the HM and the products in question. I don't think you need to be a fanboy, but having some experience with their products seems like a relatively small ask.
You would just come off as better than everyone else. So you don’t use WhatsApp, fb, insta? Your going to apply for a job where you can make millions over your career but not take the time to learn the product
First round interviews with recruiters are easy. They just want to validate what they scan on your resume is kinda like what the HM wanted. The real test is when you speak with the HM. If you don't know anything about PMM, be prepared to tank that because you can't fake it like you can with engineering. If I were you, I would bow out now gracefully, take classes in product marketing- maybe even get certified by the PMA - then go for it. Trust me. You are making a huge mistake going for a product marketing job at FAANG without any relevant experience. And yes, product marketing is different between industries.
Geez at least recommend some books to read
Most of the books I read are somewhat dated as I read them in the 1990s. Better to check out blogs on the subject - I can share some if you want, but given your snarkiness, not sure if you'd check then out.
