Car accident at my fault, how to avoid paying the damages?
Hoppers - One who moves companies frequently. Optimization Target - TC. Some rare people who are not meant for any company and just running away from work. Lifer - One who are in the same company for decade+. Optimization Target - Career Growth. But more common people actually are who are un-hirable for other companies. Note - Lifer also switch companies, but always with the target of spending next decade. People who are the most successful in any company (the top 1%) are often the lifers. But some of the bottom most people who are stuck in the same level for a long time are also often the lifers. Considering a Tech career of 25 years, who do you think has a higher chance to come out with larger Net Worth (Not TC or position) -
The highest TC earning upper managers are all hoppers. The grift algorithm is: - Go to a company at L+1 level. - Start some multi year initiatives that have no real value to the actual people doing the work but sound shiny in OKR meetings. - When things inevitably fail, scapegoat some reports. - Before the fire burns too wildly, hop to another. company. Usually around the 2-3 year mark. - Repeat.
Net worth depends on so many factors other than whether you are hopper or lifer like spending habits, lifestyle, family circumstances, side hustles/investments, and most importantly luck. Even if you consider money made purely from the job, it still is luck.
The only reward you get from staying is slower TC and title growth
The lifers who you see at top are only 10% people who keep getting promoted because they're the chosen one and know how to play politics etc. Apart from work. Before joining blind, i believed it too but on avg, hoppers not only make more tc but also get promoted more often.
Net worth as in the number of people who attend your funeral- lifer without doubt.
My father in law worked in veterans affairs in state govt - helped *a lot* of vets, and had real impact on real people’s lives. He had a retirement party, and there were literally 100s of people there. Life ain’t measured in dollars.
In addition, most (not all) lifers tend to be really unlikable people. Idk why it is but the lifers seem to be smug and hard to work with. They have job security from their tribal knowledge and they know it
Definitely a lifer. Spent 11 years at my last company, plan to stay with Microsoft till I retire or it looks like I'm on the list for layoffs.
Lifer only works if the company is aggressively growing and they are at the right place at the right time.
Lifers tend to be significantly less ambitious on average. So it’s not a fair comparison. Changing jobs frequently enough (tenures 1-3 years) maximize your exposure to different problems and help you gain breath. For sure with more skills you will get higher TC. Staying in the same job for a long time with surely make your job monotone after a while, and limit your growth. A hopper switches once they are no longer learning at the same rate anymore. A lifer is less concerned with that.
From what I’ve seen job hopping can have a diminishing return beyond a certain level. You might end up width a breadth of experience but most senior engineers don’t get too deep in 1-2 years
Hopper undoubtedly. In my experience lifers don’t hop just because they’re content with their TC and are concerned more with other aspects of life. A much healthier attitude imo
