I've interviewed at Citadel in the past, did not make it past an onsite interview. Today, spoke to a recruiter about NXT and was told they could not move forward due to low gpa (3.2). This was for NXT program, swe role Wondering if gpa matters for experienced hires (5+yoe)? Hoping to try again in future and not get shot down for something in the past that I can't change. Can anyone who's familiar with their process provide insight? Thanks! #citadel #swe #facebook #microsoft
Then why did you even list it in your resume? Or did they ask for transcript?
Asked for gpa on the phone
Plenty of other fish in the sea. They can keep their GPA bs
Stupid companies..
I heard that GPA / rank in class is actually correlated statistically with performance track on the job, whereas interview performance is not. So I understand why a company would look at it... But I also know great people with low GPA so I know correlation is just correlation. For 5+ years I think there should be other, more relevant signal. (Getting quick promotions, high perf ratings, etc.)
This is actually false and I’m surprised that you work at Google and don’t know this. Your HR department did a huge study and found only weak correlation up to 1.5y after graduation and no correlation after 4 years.
Oh, thanks. I'll re-check my facts to make sure I have them clear. Technically what you said and what I said are not mutually exclusive. Exactly what I had heard (from my former manager) was that rank in class and GPA are both more correlated with perf than interview ratings.
Wow, didn’t know companies pay attention like that once you’re experienced. Wonder if they would have took your in-major gpa if it was better?
Agree it is somewhat ridiculous. I believe there is some cutoff time like 5 or 10 years after which they don’t care anymore.
Thanks for the response! Did you get in with high gpa as new grad/ low yoe. Or joined as experienced hire and they didn’t care.
Are you a bodyguard?
This sucks, but I experienced something similar when applying to national labs. Sandia specifically had a rule of 3.5 of higher. Even though I did a masters where I got a 3.8, they didn't care.
Was it your internal or external recruiter? I had a 3.2 GPA and had no trouble getting an on-site for SWE NXT
Probably because they have other candidates just as if not more qualified with a 3.8 gpa 🤷♂️ They don't hire that many people
These east coast fin tech companies care more about GPA. Old style of hiring. Fk them
Citadel isn't east coast or fintech lol
Chicago and NYC offices. I've been to both.
