Is it a dumb idea to make a move to HBO Max in the midst of the Discovery / WarnerMedia merger? Am I just going to possibly be out of a job in a year when the planned merger closes (assuming it closes)? (Non tech role) #mediacom #media #tech
I wouldn't, too risky. Mergers and layoffs aren't too far from each other
What role/TC?
Even if you don't get laid off you'll have to deal with the after math of consolidating teams, tech, infrastructure. Find something else if you can.
Warner Media kinda trash tbh
You are non-tech, I would advise not to come unless you really want to get a foot in the door into streaming.
I’ve heard HBO Max is relatively safe from merger layoffs. It’s supposed to be like, a more well-funded startup within an incumbent media company. Word is the Max people get special treatment haha
Tech people in HBO Max are relatively safe for sure. OP is non-tech which is still vulnerable to layoffs IMHO
Nobody is safe from merger layoffs.
is getting a job at discovery+ in india as a sde2 is safe? considering merger
What role, product and TC? Like others have said, tech roles are safer but none are guaranteed safe or unsafe. If you could come in with a good enough package and some RSUs that would vest before any layoffs that could workout. Often during a merger those shares get bought back higher than market value. Everything is up in the air right now though so who knows how things will play out. Probably a year or more before anyone knows anything though.
yes, it's an idea you will regret
I see it as risky with no upside. If I had an alternative, I would use it.
