Try being an Angel investor - build a portfolio and at the same time apply to become a scout for VCs

Be an angel. It’s the fastest and best way to build a portfolio and vet (and be vetted by) the firms you might join. You don’t even have to leave your job to do it (unless they stipulate against it). Souce: founder of a $25M regional VC firm
