everyone's dancing around the elephant in the room here, and I'm not sure how to go about asking my manager this without indicating fear of getting laid off. id appreciate any ideas
No but you can still draw conclusions based on the answer you get. Manager could either just say no and brush it off, or stress that you're really good and don't need to worry.
Exactly. If there is hesitation in the response then you should start looking.
Odds are they have no idea. Low level managers arenât generally informed of those types of things until quite late.
This. At my last company corporate laid off tens of thousands. One of my coworkers asked his manager if he was at risk and his manager said âyeahâ turned out he was fine but his manager got let go lol.
Don't the low level managers eventually decide who to let go?
If you trust your manager, ask directly. Then, try to read between the lines if he/she says anything other than ânoâ. He/she may not know, and probably couldnât say if they did, but may try to give you a feel if they know something or have a feeling that things donât look good. If you donât trust them, thereâs no point in asking. Before I was laid off, my manager said that he didnât know (I believe he didnât), but when I asked if he thought it was a good idea for me to start looking just in case, he said that it wouldnât hurt for me to start looking around.
Is layoff coming to OCI? They are already having hiring freeze.
Nah not that I know of anyway. But I figured this thing drags on long enough and we can all see the writings on the wall
I was laid off from a startup before. I was on good terms with my VP, so he gave me a few days heads up without explicitly saying the words. He took the chance as he knew me well enough to know I will react in a level headed way. I used the few days to let it sink in and started making calls to friends to get referrals. If you have a good equation with your manager and s/he has confidence that you wonât go berserk or leak it everywhere, they will drop big hints.
I was in a similar situation few months ago. It was right at the beginning of covid. I asked my manager during our 1:1. âI am concerned about layoffs. What are your thoughts?â. He told me not too worry, that we are critical for the business. One week later we were both gone. He had no idea...
At TripActions
Yes sir
If you have to ask you are at risk
Think itâs a good idea to renew my lease?
Where else would you live?
If you don't feel comfortable asking directly, you can ask what's the approach going to be (i.e. Is it Based on performance? Based on time in the company? Etc...)
Say âhey am I at risk of getting laid off?â If you want a direct answer, be direct.
Bull, you're assuming managers will actually be honest.
Make sure to "wink, wink" as u say this for that extra effect. No one can lie to you after that.
