Anyone else ever feel the paradox of thinking both: 1) "whoa, my TC is low relative to others in tech! even people younger than me often make more!" but also 2) I am trapped in tech, bc any other job would be a huge pay cut, and in absolute terms I make way too much compared to decent people in useful jobs like teaching and service industries Working is stupid. Too bad everything costs so much money 🤷🏽♂️🤦🏽♂️⚰️ tc: 330k
Why do so many people feel guilty for making more money than teachers.
Comparing two different professions is like comparing oranges to apples. Would you rather sell your oranges for lower money if oranges are being sold and bought for a higher price? If the quality is different then there's a chance to improve your orange's quality as well. It has to do with getting appropriately paid for. If not, what can I do to improve my skill set to increase the sale amount?
Because it feels like I’m selling my soul for corporate greed while teachers have important missions like try to educate kids of next generation. But I’m also aware of supply/demand, if becoming a decent dev was so easy more people would do it instead of becoming teachers, I’ve also met a lot of very mediocre people who didn’t know what they want to do after college so thats when they decide to get a education certificate and try to get a job as a teacher. Idk I feel very conflicted.
1) We need more leetcode. 2) Your employer doesn’t give you a bunch of money as charity. You provide the value to your company because what you do provides value to the company’s customers. People in tech just can have an outsized effect because of how interconnected our modern world is - a new feature or product can benefit people in +/- 195 countries. Maybe you can be more at ease by looking at how high tech salaries benefit other people. Tech generates revenue in countries all over the globe, which translates to you being paid a lot. The federal government takes their cut, then the state government, and then the city (SF 😒) to redistribute your compensation from value you provide to consumers all across the globe. So when a Google Ad is sold in Africa or when Facebook products are used in Latin America, that ultimately translates to more $ for infrastructure and social programs domestically.
Indeed.
Can’t you FIRE on that?
