Ask what are their plans to compete with Facebook?

OfferUp yfkbdfz3 Aug 15, 2018

There is a big difference between this two apps: Marketplace for FB is just a platform to organize their sell-buy groups, they don't have shipping and more and more focus on new items, they also highly focused on international market. OfferUp on the other hand, is highly focused on US market, has shipping and is separated from your social medea account. Two apps are really different and in future will diverge even more.

Do you mean how you're gonna compete with OU? I dont know about anyone else but I dont want to sell my second hand goods to people I directly know.

Any offerup folks?

OfferUp yfkbdfz3 Aug 15, 2018

Great place, amazing people 👌

OfferUp hIlQ26 Aug 16, 2018

It's good but not perfect. Probably depends on what you're after OP. Our employee surveys say people are overall fairly happy, with some notable exceptions in some teams

We just had Ben Horowitz visit and field questions about a wide range of startup & vc topics. Don't think there would be these opportunities in a larger org with this level of direct contact and access.

What does OfferUp value the most in candidates? What will it take for me to get an offer there?

OfferUp fizzypop Apr 24, 2019

If you join, you'll soon have more tenure than most on the team in that people are leaving at alarming rates. Think 50%+ attrition in engineering.

The nepotism VP engineering who brought in and promoted bunch of incompetent Microsoft idiots to manager positions was fired. All former directors were let go. New CTO at the skill level of Amazon SDE2 is running the engineering. A new director who mainly spent his career as an SDET at Microsoft was hired (we all know Microsoft SDET a few years ago are really manual testers). Another Amazon businessman was hired as an engineering director. Leadership is desperate of showing their existence with technology changes in an attempt to fake a tech savvy impression, which only turns out to be laughing matter to everyone. All of the capable managers and engineers have left. Only those who can’t get offer anywhere is stuck - namely the former Microsoft dudes brought in and promoted to managers out of nepotism (who repeatedly got rejected on 1st phone screens by other companies) and old timers who are just lazy and incompetent to collect monthly paychecks.

It's pretty good. Great learning. Extremely fast-paced. But you have a great sense of ownership.things are now getting better and calmer. We did get rid of people polluting the workplace. Exciting times and a lot of opportunities. If you are looking for learning and ownership/impact define a place to work at. Lately wlb have been off for eng. But they do give alternate fri off which is very helpful.
