Thumbtack stability

Sad to hear 20+ Thumbtack recruiters are gone last week. Is thumbtack still stable or it might have larger round of lay off plan in the incoming year? It looks like the most recent round funding has been one and half year ago. How does the business go? #thumbtack

These home services companies are garbage. The great contractors don't need the site and the rest won't get back to you or are people you don't want to work with anyway.

Thanks for providing this point of view

I think its a cool company, my aunt just used it and it helped her find and book a locksmith in 5 minutes

Seems like if they aren't laying off any non-recruiters that makes then more stable than stripe.

Thanks for providing this info. Yeah right now no impact on non-recruiters at Thumbtack so far. Hope the team morale would not be affected that much as well

Thumbtack’s model revolves around new/desperate contractors looking for work. It’s a casino, you lose a lot on leads but when you get that one win, you continue to pay for more leads in hopes you get more wins. The bigger companies use it as just another source of marketing/lead gen but typically have a smaller budget and will taper off after quarterly/annual reviews (if they have them in place). If the economy is in a good spot, thumbtack will be fine, but with a recession in play and homeowners not spending on upgrades / services and small business owners taking less risks on their means of marketing, thumbtack will suffer. I see budgeting changes or more layoffs coming soon in Q1. Another thing to look at, all of their founders besides Marco have left to become VC’s and build new companies. They are completely hands off with thumbtack. Thumbtack relies on constant funding to stay viable, I doubt they are profitable yet and if they are, not enough to warrant a billion+ value.

We are trying to move away from a lead oriented model to a bookings oriented model which is more promising

@honkular I don’t think so, customers will book a service under the assumption it’s going to be X price, pro will have to communicate with customer it’s actually a different price / they need to come out to scope the job and customer will cancel.
