MailChimp TC?

Looking to jump ship and move down south. What does TC look like at Mailchimp? Is there stock/signing bonus? Friend got an offer at SWE3 for $115k salary and no signing bonus so far #offer

The Home Depot AAWf82 Sep 17, 2020

I think there is no stock as it is a private company

Their offers are pretty low compared to the rest of the tech space, but good culture and wlb from what I’ve learned. Very selective about preserving that culture. Atlanta is getting pretty expensive (not crazy, but getting there).

Recruiter told me 160-175k TC with 125k base couple years ago, tech stack isn't overly impressive though. Why move? Atlanta isn't great for tech

Mailchimp ivn3i2 Sep 18, 2020

Atlanta is pretty much the only tech hub in the SE.

Mailchimp ivn3i2 Sep 18, 2020

No stock, only bonuses, profit sharing, 401k and quarterly performance bonuses. I've been told we only do sign on bonuses for "senior and above" even if you're relocating.

Microsoft Bill Gate$ Dec 7, 2020

That’s not true.

Mailchimp id387s Dec 7, 2020

Was true when I started.

You work at Mailchimp because you want to be there. Money is below average if you don't count benefits. Benefits are amazing and more than make up for it. 100% of health insurance covered. Maxed out 401k contributions (seriously, huge gifts every year) lots of random bonuses. Then there's just the environment and the culture and the experience. Best tech job outside of silicon valley.

If you live in another tech hub, don’t bother with mailchimp. Pay is just ok, tech is awful, engineering org lacks focus because product is in charge and doesn’t plan more than 3 months ahead. Engineers are seen as interchangeable widgets. I know an engineer that got shifted to five different teams or projects within 3 months. Pay depends on location, but it’s low for our industry across the board. If you work from the coastal offices expect resentment from the Atlanta base, even though you’re paid less than market for your area. People brag about the culture but it’s only liberal in comparison to the rest of Georgia. “There’s no dress code!” Just isn’t impressive if your other options are actual tech companies. If you’re from anywhere else it seems closer to run of the mill corporate. If you want to work for a tech company, look elsewhere. If you want to work for a slow paced, stable, surface-friendly company, it might be a good fit.

To better answer your question, it’s normal for engineers to get 10% performance bonus, the company historically drops 19% “profit sharing” in our 401ks yearly, and there’s an up to 10% “pizza bonus” based on company metrics every year (we’ve always met it but this year probably won’t). No stock because it’s private, but everything is cash so TC is actual take home instead of expensive lottery tickets.

Those “lottery tickets” would have been golden.

The Home Depot AAWf82 Sep 20, 2020

Any idea what the bonus % is for Product Managers? What is a pizza bonus?

Mailchimp ivn3i2 Sep 20, 2020

Just the name of the end of year bonus.

Airbnb qkpv60 Sep 21, 2020

Is the bonus percentage higher for a staff or principal engineer?

Mailchimp brainwave Sep 22, 2020

no

Mailchimp ivn3i2 Sep 22, 2020

I've heard yes; they have a different bonus structure from several peers. Don't know how to confirm though

Mailchimp k33k Jun 30, 2021

More senior staff level get higher bonus percentage. Can confirm.
