Every State has different rules. Go to your DMV site and find the appropriate link.

In CA, you don't get to keep the plates unless they are custom plates

Go to DMV, surrender plates, cancel the registration and insurance. You can try it online also.

Oh can i surrender plates via online? I mean should i do this even though i have my own plates? They dont have my plate

Registration is more important 'cause that has the car's vin in your name in their system. Looks like ny doesn't allow you online https://dmv.ny.gov/registration/surrender-vehicle-plates-dmv

Report the sale to the DMV and keep records. I was just sent to collections for parking tickets for a vehicle I sold 8 years ago. The person I sold too never registered it so the tickets were under my name and probably had noticed being sent to my previous address but I never knew that.

Some guy might use your vehicle as a getaway 🚘 in Rhode Island.

Often times state DMVs allow you to say you give up interest in a vehicle or something like that. This allows you to record that you don't own it, in the event the buyer fails to register it.
