Do you really feel special in your Tesla?
Coming from Europe to the Bay Area, I'd like to understand about internet for home. Where I live, I have an optical fibre subscription for 50€ per month, giving me unlimited 600 Mbps download, 200 Mbps upload, plus unlimited free phone (including many international), IPv6 and static IPv4, free TV (about 100 channels). There are 4 main independent ISPs to choose from, plus a few minor ones depending on location. What can I expect in the Bay Area when I come? are the options the same everywhere or are some locations better than others? (and I guess same question for mobile...)
You are fucked! Be ready to shell out extra for every little damn thing.
The answer will vary by city. We pay ~$60/month for gigabit fiber in SF.
Thanks, what's your ISP? Which cities in the Bay Area have fiber?
Lucky you. Att is only fiber in South Bay. $50-$100 a month
Often times you will find only 2 ISP options, and they won't compare. For example, 50mbps from one provider and 1gbps from another. There is basically no choice at that point.
Never Comcast. Absolutely never. Don’t bother with cable, get an Apple TV or Chromecast. You may not even need a landline.
Not unless Comcast is the only ISP option you have... Landline you can do without.
Even then never Comcast. Comcast is literally worse than cancer and Hitler combined.
You will have fewer more expensive options which depend on location. At my house the only choices are ATT DSL and Comcast cable. DSL is horrible and stops working when it is raining. Cable is OK, but expensive and customer service is a nightmare. I pay ~$50/mo for 180 Mbps down / 6 Mbps up. Both companies will raise fees every year forcing you to eventually switch.
So maybe I can include that when choosing where to live. What would be the best places?
No idea. Housing will be by far your biggest deciding factor followed by things like commute times and neighborhood (schools etc). Internet bills are 0.1% of TC and don’t register in the family budget...
