why software companies pay so high only in the US ?

Why don’t they pay you as much as the US for the same job level ?

Cisco knU7K1 Sep 15, 2019

Whos “they?”

Google ohboy! OP Sep 15, 2019

They = software companies

Cisco knU7K1 Sep 15, 2019

They have no reason to pay as equally as US workforce for other countries. If they need to , then they will. Most of software engineers in US make core money for companies, while those at other countries usually play support roles

Isn't that how markets work?

Cisco hotdayz Sep 15, 2019

Cost of living

Facebook public2 Sep 15, 2019

The only incorrect answer here lol

Facebook gEKd54 Sep 15, 2019

As I commented above cost of living has nothing to do with it... software engineering salaries in London, for example, are much much lower than the salaries in San Francisco relative to to the cost of living in each location. It is all about market competition and as surprising as this might be to people used to the tech scene, tech is not the most lucrative industry in all geos (Btw - in facebook this is explicitly stated in the internal wiki)

Making money

Microsoft togo Sep 15, 2019

Why would “they”? Do you pay more for your bread because it costs more in country X? The cost is determined by the market of supply of talent and demand for talent. It isn’t cost of living or innovation in US or some political bs of paying immigrants low wages. The cost of living in EU is higher than US, but TC is lower. are you an engineer?

Amazon ready2ret Sep 15, 2019

Supply and demand. Remember US has innovated most of software that all of us cannot live without. India, Europe’s and Canada have done nothing except maintain the innovation that was done by US

Microsoft Krololo Sep 15, 2019

Lol. Check who paid for neural network research during AI winter. I agree about supply and demand though. A shorter answer would be "because they can"

Zynga cdev6676 Sep 15, 2019

American companies are the most profitable. There is barely any innovation outside the US so everyone flocks to the US.A combination of that + tough immigration results in the highest wages. China and India are catching up I guess but everything else is a distant second for now,

Google some-swe Sep 15, 2019

How about Canada ?

Zynga cdev6676 Sep 15, 2019

Canada is just American companies having a satellite office -probably ranks the least in innovation compared to even Germany and the UK

Amazon HJFu05 Sep 15, 2019

USA More openings less engineers India More openings surplus engineers Europe Few openings more engineers. Ignore the "support" and "innovation" it's just supply and demand. Amazon's customer returns tech team is 100% based in India so entire world's returns depends on India. There are a few other teams which are based in India.

The more interesting question is, why are American tech companies so much more successful than companies in other countries?

Facebook gEKd54 Sep 15, 2019

It's because the us is a huge consumer market that all speaks a single language with minimal regulatory differences between states (unlike Europe and the not very successful european union). It is much easier to be successful in your local market and in the case of us based companies, that's a big enough market to sustain their growth and make them market leaders. Once that happens, all the vc money goes to american companies and it goes in a loop A similar good example is chinese companies. As the country stopped being so poor they stayed growing tech companies that rival the us companies in scale and revenue despite operating in a single market (china) and only being available in chinese. The USs overall success is impressive, the tech scene - not so much

Airbnb alkk Sep 15, 2019

But the US companies driving TC growth are wildly successful not because of their US market dominance alone, but because of their worldwide dominance. They’ve successfully made the jump from domestic to international markets. There are countless other examples of companies that lead their domestic market but fail worldwide. You mentioned China - China has a very strong supply of good technical talent but Chinese companies have almost universally failed in expanding internationally.

Microsoft hiii Sep 15, 2019

The top Chinese software companies pay just as much, but you're expected to work 72 hours a week.
