I’ve been applying to jobs for 6+ months now. I have solid experience working at a startup, a creative director for a small local business, and now at JP. i rewrote my resume a dozen time to optimize it, haven’t gotten even a single recruiter call. how do i punch through in this market? i’d really like to increase my comp in the next jump but i just don’t see it happening, which might mean i have a better chance at negotiating a raise here - which i don’t want to do does anyone have perspective or advice? thank you in advance 120 4
Reach out to your network and request informational interviews. Ask for constructive feedback on your resume, portfolio, and other application materials.
i don’t have a large network of designers, the majority of my design network came from JP and you can imagine that being a bit awkward lol but i hear your point, im sure i could get more feedback
4 YOE isn't what it used to be - there are still a lot of unemployed Principal/Staff designers that will get the attention.
It’s rough out there. You in product or brand?
product design
It's still a blood bath out there, DM me and we can give each other feedback on our portfolios!
i’m game! i’m out of dms though, feel free to message me
DM me op:) I am in same boat, but also out of dm
Do you have a bunch of random titles on your resume? Banks tend to give out bullshit titles. Creative direction is not product design and that experience doesn’t always translate well.
oh interesting, didn’t realize that about the creative direction. i should update that, and no to the bank bs😂- very aware of that thanks!
Good luck!
You’re competing with people that have 10+ years of experience, I’m in the same boat. You just have to keep trying, nothing else to do. Your portfolio may not have the cases they’re looking for, and JPM - though a big name - doesn’t shout “I can independently handle large projects.” If you want to DM me your portfolio feel free to.
What is going on? Devin AI
How many actual years of experience do you have in a role with UX or Product Designer as your official title? As a hiring manager, most often I see designers trying to conflate their YOE. We see through all the word smithing. By the sound of it, you may be applying for roles with more experience required and perhaps hiring managers can tell by your resume and portfolio. YOE isn’t just a number requirement; we use it to find a certain level of design craft and team experience. Best bet is to read job descriptions very carefully and make sure you absolutely fit most of their “what we’re looking for” criteria. You’ll have better chances applying to less jobs if they are a closer fit than just putting in a high quantity of apps anywhere. Also don’t lie and change your role from Creative Director to ___ Designer on your resume if that wasn’t your actual role. If you did UX work then just show it in your portfolio. Lastly, this app can be toxic. All the FAANG and TC bragging is not realistic of the design world. These people are in their own toxic bubble. There are a lot of great smaller companies with solid design teams that are looking for good designers. Don’t limit yourself. If you’re in it for the money, you’ve picked the wrong profession. Those of us at the top of our game get paid well but money was never our motivator. Good luck!
thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts, to clarify, i have 4 yoe in design and have worked at a couple companies this may be a tall ask, would you be willing to provide feedback on my portfolio?
Sure! DM me a link to your portfolio.
