Thinking about jumping to other defense companies. Main reason is due to a lot of medical complications with family and I want to be there for them than absent. So with that I’m looking at remote roles. I know Raytheon does remote. Any others I should consider? I heard Raytheon benefits aren’t the greatest. They have low Match and no megabackdoor. Compared to Boeing we have 10% match with megabackdoor. But Boeing full time remote roles aren’t widely available. My role is in office with some special cases of remote only if there’s unclass work (usually not a lot). So that’s the trade off I suppose. Should I bother jumping to remote? Which companies should I consider besides Raytheon? Boeing BDS SoCal SWE L3 TC: 170k (150k base + 20K RSU) YOE: 3 Update: Needed to clarify. YOE is 5. 2 YOE embedded and 3 YOE fullstack/cloud. Sorry for confusion.
How did you get to 170k TC at 3 YOE? Isn't an L3 base around 120k?
He has 5 yoe + masters. The 2 yoe is in his current role. A little misleading
Also TC might be base + 10% 401K. Then again we gotta admit aero corps are cheap and should ask for more
are you aware of medical exemptions for remote work? there are multiple people on my team who are fully remote and will stay fully remote even though everyone else was just called back in 5 days a week by idiot executives. they can do this because of medical exemptions. something to look into if you stay at boeing
No I’m not. Can you DM me more specifics? Idt this would apply to me since the medical is family and not me directly. Also remote for Boeing BDS sounds conditional and rare at the same time.
Remote for defense companies is a hard sell due to classified work. I'd spend ur time looking at non-defense roles.
If you want remote at one of these be prepared to be broke
I feel like I’m already there ): where did you end up going? Is grass greener there?
Lots of remote software roles in EVTOL companies. Have you considered? Some of them have great benefits too... including unlimited PTO. If you have any C++, python, DO-178, software certification experience, lots of roles out there.
This is a good consideration. I didn’t realize there were remote roles. I checked joby and archer. No remote roles. Which companies are you referring to?
Wisk, merlin, zipline maybe? There's lists of evtol/UAM companies out there. Lots of remote job boards and LinkedIn posts as well. Unfortunately aerospace is not going to give u the salaries to compete with tech companies, but if you want to stay aerospace, options might be limited. You may have to get creative.. and identify skills transferrable to roles you might not have considered before.
We gotta start up our own company boys - call it The Noring Company kind of like the Boring company but Northrop + Boeing combined !
Except more inclusive 🤣
You mention unclass work. Are you looking to keep your clearance? I'd check out Striveworks & Vannevar labs for cleared remote roles.
I don’t mind dropping my clearance. Never heard of those but I’ll check it out thanks!
Your retirement will vary depending on the various business units at Raytheon for at least the upcoming year or so. There's still merger activities HR and PTO wise. There are non class swe tools jobs but maybe a pay cut/boring. If you have a cool boss remote is great and very flexible with the 9/80 or even 4/10 schedule. It'll just depend what department and who is your manager.
Thanks for the insight! Raytheon seems to be most promising.
I didn’t know Boeing offered RSU and also paid much more than NG. I thought all defense companies have very similar pay ranges.
you dont want boeing RSUs, they cancelled raises during covid and gave everyone RSUs instead that took 3 years to vest just in time for another 737 max disaster and the stock to tank again
Maybe try jumping to one of the other orgs? I’m currently in BGS and we’re on a hybrid schedule. Only need to be in the office 1-2 times a week. Manager plays a big part in keeping in that way though.
i’ll have to keep an eye on if that’s still the case in november when im open to move roles again. being stuck in traffic five days a week is killing me in BDS
Good point. Funny you mention BGS because I have no idea about the other orgs outside of BDS. Are they same minus clearance?

Raytheon and Northrop won’t be able to match that TC with 3YOE
NG maxes out at 160k for SWE3 (5-7YOE?), definitely would be taking a paycut for 3YOE.
Well that sucks.. I have a masters if that counts. I have 2YOE as embedded but not sure if that counts. The 3YOE I listed is my current position doing fullstack but mostly backend. I’m trying to avoid embedded. So for NG Am I screwed?
