I know, it is a large city, expensive, can be noisy, etc.... but it has many conveniences that other cities in the US just don't have. * You don't need a car. Grocery stores, hardware stores, pizza places, pharmacies; they are all within walking distance. * Coffee places everywhere, in just a 5mins walk you can stumble in at least 4-5 great coffee places * Bars, lounges, restaurants, night life is good, (but not clubs for some reason) * Lots to do, as long as you have a good TC $$ * Doesn't have the harsh winters of Boston or Chicago, and it can have lovely periods of weather during spring and fall * Sports is good, you can find any league you want (soccer, volleyball, even beerball/kickball) * Dating is good, if you like the 'games' associated with it * Very close to Europe and cheap flights. I have had weekend trips to Europe several times (6.55hrs to Portugal, 6.5hrs to England). 4 hrs to Iceland. * People are actually pretty nice and not rude. Sure, everyone is busy and trying to make it, but it feels a very human place, even though the whole city is unreally - large. Very few assholes * When I moved here, there were fewer good tech jobs, but now it is seems like all large companies have offices here, and you see more startups as well Cons: * Expensive * Can be noisy * People move often. * Dating feels like a meat grinder (can be hard to form a LTR) * Nature is lacking compared to the West Coast * People can be more hustler types, and more direct, but less flaky than the West Coast. * Might be hard to have kids, yet I have two friends doing fine with one kid so far * The bay area has more job choices in tech, but that is changing, with nyc starting to become more important The pandemic introduced a lot of good changes to the city, with outdoor dinning, and tables and chairs everywhere outside, making it feel more European. I'd have to say, back in 2012-2015 the Bay Area or LA would have been more chill / better places, but with CA turning into a sh!t show, and SF turning into a dystopian city (both super expensive and unsafe), NYC has taken the cake again as the best city in the USA. Also, with Brexit and London becoming less important, now NYC is truly again the capital of the free world. (Typing this from a warm cozy coffee place in Manhattan, with a soothing music, with large windows, overlooking people and cars passing by, in a slight chilly rain. Feels like I am in a Low-Fi music video). # nyc #lifestyle
I used to travel to NY 10-15 times a year. You left out two of my least favorite aspects: 1. Humidity 2. The smell of garbage on a hot day
And rats of course. As for the 'Humidity' part, it is pretty much all the US, minus West Coast, NM and Arizona. NYC is neither better or worse than other places except CA of course. Even the midwest, or NW Pacific have a humidity problem as well. CA is in its own league, that no other state can match.
Yep. Exactly. Calling the weather of NYC a strength is an absolute joke. There's like 5 good weeks a year and the rest is shit.
also finance draws the hatred instead of tech compared to bay and you can surround yourself with ppl who aren’t in tech
- you need a car to go outside - coffee is garbage, you probably never tried third wave coffee - $20 shitty cocktails (but some speakeasy places are good). Music scene is good tho. - no winter yes, terrible cold also yes - have no idea, cycling is not bad but not many routes around - no idea - airports yes - jobs are limited it’s a really nice place to spend few years when you’re 23-33yo with $$$ but awful place to live
Agree with every point except "Doesn't have the harsh winters of Boston or Chicago". NYC is still cold, but just above zero, so everything turns to slush and you don't even get to enjoy the snow.
It’s a really tricky “cold”. Numbers aren’t bad. But that slow but never ending wind and humidity makes it really bad
NYC is correctly rated
Nyc is amazing, i agree!! Lived there for a year and loved it so much :)
NYC is absolutely filthy. Everything is way too crowded all the time. MTA sucks. Every neighborhood that isn’t a gentrified bubble of wealth is a decaying and neglected cesspool.
It’s a place to build character, not long term for me
Pretty hard to argue that nyc is underrated by most people .. its just that it's too expensive for most people to even consider the other pros and cons
I generally believe nyc is about what it should be, but reading your post is cancer and makes it feel overrated.
🤣
That's it, you are getting PIP-ed :D
