Not much information out there. What’s the salary for senior staff engineers working in AI/ML domain with 6-8 yrs experience? Location: Bay Area Current TC: 200k #engineering
At a master level, my TC is around 280 to 300ish. But contrary to what bobthecodr said, there are many at master level. And I see a lot of distinguished engineers too
Regarding master, my observation in the orgs I worked with was that the people at this level had 9+ yoe with a BS or MS and had moderate leadership experience before being promoted. Most people cap out at expert.
Master level comes after experienced level? And what’s the TC range for experienced level?
Brief summary of relevant levels and my attempt to explain them: - specialist: mid level engineers - expert: a very wide level that's the most common terminal level. Similar to Sr.SW engineer at most large companies - master: usually leads a team of 6-12 in my experience. Works closely with a manager or director. May lead projects involving multiple teams. - distinguished technologist: Very experienced, accomplished engineers who work closely with a director/vp. Sets the direction for multiple teams. There were 4 DTs among 200 engineers at my last org. Never met a DT in another poorly funded org earlier in my career.
Expert TC is what I mentioned earlier. You may get a 10-15% premium if your org is well funded and because AI/ML is in slightly higher demand than average, from my observations. Overall, HPE is definitely not somewhere to go for great TC. You might join for OK comp, generally decent wlb, and a shot at friendly, tenured mentors given that the average age was something like 37-39 last I heard. I was frequently the youngest on my teams even after getting to expert, fwiw.
Thank you.
You'll very likely be slotted in for an expert level role (Sr sw engineer). The next level, master, is quite competitive. Master is a small percentage of engineers (8-12%) and usually reserved for fairly tenured employees with an impressive track record. Levels above master are difficult to get to and were about 2-4% of engineers within my orgs. Generally I'd say a modest 190-240k, but AI/ML might get a small premium. Wlb is generally good but pay isn't competitive for ICs.
Thank you.!
