Currently in institional sales in finance for a litttle over a year. I think my true passion is in tech and was wondering if there are roles at FAANG that are easier for me to get my foot in the door first? TC is currently at 90. Heard there are full-time oding bootcamps, but this might be something to do part time once I am at a firm and eventually work my way to be a SWE. Need a paycheck to run first and I feel like a non-coding role as the next step is the perfect balance now. That way, I get to see if I REALLY want to be a SWE or be in non-engineering job at a tech firm. Any thoughts and recommendations fellows? Thanks a lot!
To be frank: if you aren’t a prodigious coding talent / don’t come from another strong technical background / aren’t a special case (example being a candidate with extenuating circumstances / compelling narrative) your chances of landing a job at a FAANG company are relatively slim. https://www.rooftopslushie.com/request/Bootcamper-hoping-to-work-for-FAANG-191
being in non engineering job at a tech firm will not tell you anything about‘s done in the tech, you will probably learn about products and all other high level stuff.
Thanks for all the insights you all. I discovered Blind recently and it has been very informative. My dilemma is should I give up this big brand name that I worked hard to get into over last 5 years and start something new from scratch. (Quit my job and go to coding boot camp)
What about tech sales?
I was in finance for 4 years before I became a SWE. I went through App Academy
TC & YoE?
Why'd you chase this for 5 years only to suddenly want Tech? I'd think about that a bit more before quitting to go to a bootcamp
With an institutional sales background you’ll need a bootcamp to become swe. Working at a tech firm in non-tech departments will tell you nothing about whether you’ll enjoy being a swe.
