Just got promoted to L6 (SDE) at Amazon but I also have an E5 offer from Facebook. Both are senior roles. Been at Amazon for >5 years. If compensation isn’t the driving factor, what would you choose between the two and why? I’m particularly interested in career growth, opportunities, engineering problems and impact. L6’s at Amazon are well respected and have broader influence and I’m curious how does E5 at FB compare to L6 at Amazon in terms of learning, influence and career advancement.
How’s FB’s promo process? Is it straight forward or lots of BS?
E5 is not the same prestige as L6, I'd try negotiate a level up.
Since when did this fake prestige bullshit got added to software engineering. There is nothing prestigious about working as a software engineer nowadays. If you want real prestige go become a neuro surgeon or a cardiologist or a nuclear physicist.
But money-wise E5 is better than L6. At L6 to get comparable comp is difficult. You can do impact at both places.
How difficult were interviews? All from leetcode? Fb tagged? Easy/med/hard?
The only way a company shows how much it respects you is money. What is prestige if not a measure of respect?
Blind turned me off of FB. Seems too cut throat there.
Yeah, and Amazon is not.
I just made the jump from Amazon to Facebook. Just do it. It’s a different world here.
Were you an L6 at Amazon and now an E5 as FB? What specifically do you like/dislike at both jobs?
Yes, except I’m not non-eng. So I can’t speak from the eng perspective. But from my first week, I see true investment from FB into their people. Clear understanding of how performance is rewarded and actually being rewarded based on your contributions. The tools! From what I can see, they have robust internal tools that just take away the need to duck tape everything together.
I'd go with FB just because there is less bs process
