Anyone have any experiences with or thoughts about Better.com? It’s a mortgage fintech startup in NYC nearing unicorn valuation. They’re offering salaries similar to FAANG and expanding very rapidly right now. I haven’t had much luck finding info about Better engineering.

Sounds like blend labs
It’s really similar to blend labs as far as I can tell. I believe the major difference is that Blend’s major business is selling their platform to existing lenders. Better is doing some of this as well, but their main business is originating the loans themselves.
Sounds pretty neat. I wonder how they view each other as competition.

Better is located in 4 locations 2 in Cali, Charlotte and NYC - direct lender & offering more than just mortgages at this point. Took over mortgage operations for Ally bank over the summer - quite a few new partnerships in the works. The system is much more efficient than any other mortgage company, capital markets teams makes it super competitive on pricing , great investors .

Question for you two - do they pay less for front end engineers (versus generalist software engineers)? Looking at Glassdoor, that seems to be the case...
It’s a terrible work environment. The culture especially doesn’t know how to handle remote work during Covid. They started asking new hires to have their cameras on for 8 hours a day during onboarding to “make sure their working”. And you must slack/let people know when you turn your camera off to use the restroom. Its like an old school call center culture but that uses slack tools etc to seem like a startup. Be wary of joining that team unless you want to be micromanaged.

Sounds like maybe this might be just your team. Definitely know this isn’t an org requirement. Several friends there who help run the show.
Anyone here have insight on the Technical Product Mgmt Teams? Culture? Etc...???
Not so much of a team, but more of a function that get's embedded into a particular pod that will have more of a functional domain. Technical product managers from what I can see have roles similar to FANG. But obviously this could vary a bit by team, as the company is growing and formalizing more and more.

Overall I love better.com's culture, its a hyper growth startup that feels like a startup where lots of things get done quickly. But it feels like the company and people care about each other and try to move in the same direction to help the customer. In terms of partnership team directly, depends on the role. This is B2B focused, so you obviously have some of the downfalls of B2Bs where you have a single powerful customer that can shake your roadmaps a little unexpectedly. But other than that no red flags that I can see.

Hi! I am looking to join Better. My concern is with some of the recent layoffs. Would anyone here have information on what were they based on? (Performance , high compensation , last in first out). I am on a visa and layoffs are scary. Any insights will be super helpful. Thanks.
House cleaning because we grew engineering org 6x in one year during refi boom growth phase. Hard to say if they will do more but it was a relatively small layoff.
