Hey I interned at Capital one and was told recently I got a return offer as a data scientist, I haven’t received the return offer letter yet so don’t know my TC. I’m just an undergrad so don’t know how possible it is to get data science / Ml offers from other big companies. How is Capital one perceived is this space / how hard will it be to get into other tech companies doing AI/ML stuff ? Would it just be better to try to get a SDE position at one of the bigger tech companies and switch into ML later ?
No. Do ML there and then switch to another company, if you want.
Do not go!
Any reason ?
I'm assuming it's an offer into the TDP program, since you're straight out of undergrad
No it’s the data scientist title, I got really lucky impressed the right people and got an offer. Everyone else in the program was in a PhD program or masters program.
You should def take it
Hey, congrats on the offer! Getting your first job is the hardest like others said. I’d recommend taking it and trying to find a ML role internally. You will have a chance to rotate after a year as well. If you want to go to grad school, C1 can help with that too. If you want to do ML, the easiest way would be to switch after you have some work experience.
Do you know far the difference is between the data engineers/ TDP program people and the data scientist role? I have heard a lot of good things about the TDP program with people going to other good companies and into good positions at Capital one after but have not heard too much about the Data scientist role.
So we have a data engineer role and a software engineer role in tdp but I don’t think they really correlate that strongly with what you’ll be doing. It’s possible to do data science with a SE track and full stack web dev in a DE track. It’s kind of up to you to find a team that’s doing what you’re interested in. Your development advisor should be able to help you with that.
Capital One is a fucking joke. Don't bother. You can make so much more money at a real company.
$50 Billion valuation is not a joke. Just because you didn’t like it or it seems you are still there doesn’t mean you should talk about about the company. Provide a reason instead of just causally saying trash talking about the company that pays you for this f*** joke.
Having worked at C1, the $50 billion thing is only a negative, since they don’t give you any equity (they have an ESPP, but it’s nothing like RSUs as part of a compensation package). they are extremely risk averse and it really shows in the kind of work you get. It’s a good place to start your career but I wouldn’t stay long.
C1 has a really nice data science team based in NY. If you think carefully, banking is all about data. You wouldn’t be disappointed
Getting your first job is the hardest. I would take it and reevaluate after a couple years
