I have over 15 YOE , have a relatively very low salary now . ~200K. I believe M1 will be a stretch given rather limited formal management experience. Due to my current low salary, I am kind of ok with both L5 or L6. What perplexes me is that L5/L6 interview rounds are quite different . Questions: - Are L6 interview candidates considered for L5 automatically ? Or do they need to reinterview ? - How do I appropriately indicate to the recruiter to consider me for L5 if L6 does not work out ?
Google and fb automatically down level candidates who do well enough for the lower level but not well enough for the level they interview for, so u shouldn’t need to indicate that to ur recruiters.
Thanks , that helps
What if someone applies for M1 ? There is nothing to downlevel to isn't it ? I am assuming that MO is not an actual position. This question will frequently come for people who have managerial experience but not so much that they can be considered for M1
this is for eng? bar is very high for external L6 hires at FB (and yeah downlevels will happen automatically)
I understand that the bar is quite high. Can you please give a possible distribution of interviews - and what it might need to get through ?
Don’t ask for downlevel, I was downlevelled by Amazon from l5 to l4, because I specifically told them prior to interview , I had heard that l5 external hire is difficult at Amazon
L5 external is the norm, not rare. L6 external happens, but it's less common. L7 external usually only if the recruiter finds you.
Google typically downlevels. With 15yoe, you’re most likely L5. Most L6 i know are 20+ yoe. It depends on your scope and committee assessment of your level.
How come I've seen on Blind L6 with less than 20 yoe ?
It all depends on interview performance, as well as level at ur current company. For example an E6 from fb with <20 YOE has a higher chance of getting L6 at G compared to an E5 from fb trying to get up leveled.

At amazon at least, l6 candidates usually will be considered for l5 if they fail the l6 interview marginally. Study up on kool-aid questions, and even if you don’t do too well in the tech piece, you’ll be considered for l5. That being said, amazon doesn’t hire very many manager l5s.
Thank you . I am primarily preparing for L6 interview - at Google it typically is 2 behavioral 2 coding and 2 design. I believe if I do the 2 coding and 2 design well, I will be considered for L5. But then if I do them well and do the behavioral one nicely too, who knows - an L6 might also be in play !
@OP amazon L6 is google/fb L5, both in scope and salary. So you shouldn’t try L5@amazon.
