Lyft vs Airbnb

Just got an offer from both, similar package, I like both for their mission, culture, engineering team, very difficult decision for me.

Airbnb is profitable, growth slows down a little bit since last year, have some new initiatives, some competitors, but not as fierce as lyft is facing. On the side, lyft caught Uber’s wave of issue, growth very fast, but still losing tons of money.

which one will you choose and why?

Airbnb. They're a more original product. Lyft is in a more competitive space

Oh I just equate the two. I dislike hotels. Too sterile and controlled for my liking.

Never join the number two, always go to the market leader.

That's terrible advice. That means you'd never join Facebook over Google, Target over Walmart, etc.

Come to Airbnb! We have yogurt pretzels, lots of interesting technical problems, and honey dijon kettle chips!

Lyft. With a strong competitor next door, there is no scope of slacking. Competition breeds invitation and growth.

Theoretically this is true, in reality, not sure if how both will perform in long term since I think there is no loyalty on both consumer and driver side, there will always be a pricing war

  • Either way the gig economy isn't the panacea these companies purported. Airbnb prices are getting closer and closer to hotels. Lyft and Uber prices are going up too. Try harder would be my recommendation.

    • Find an opportunity which is more exciting than the gig economy. And which hasn't been copied globally yet

disagree with Meeple. if you're looking to join a company of around this size and at this stage, then I don't think you can do better than one of these two.

Airbnb. Huge potential opportunities to grow still. Experiences and concerts are just the beginning of their market outside of overnight stays

I would think so too, booking a full trip is still a hustle, if they can streamline the whole booking with an easy and understandable flow, they may have a chance to succeed in those area too

between the two I'd argue Lyft because there's more potential growth. Airbnb has already exploded across the globe and has lost a bit of luster as of late w/ prices going up and consistency going down

Tough choices. Congrats on the great options. Airbnb is definitely lower risk. A hot IPO feels inevitable. Lyft has a lot of question marks. No one knows if transportation as a service can be profitable without self driving or layering on additional business models (eats, freight, etc.). That said, I’ve heard from friends that Airbnb is in a bit of a slump. I’d likely considering interviewing at Uber if you’re interested in TaaS or choosing Airbnb for their healthy business.
