I'm an IC (engineer) who has never had a one-on-one with upper level management. Someone in upper level management has scheduled a one-on-one with me next week (they have done the same with a few other ICs too). According to the agenda, this is time to talk about strategy, priorities, feedback, and coaching/sponsorship opportunities. I'm afraid of saying things that aren't productive. What are some of the things you have brought up in your one-on-ones with upper level management? I'm interested in hearing from anyone but especially interested in the perspective of ICs.
I'd talk about context you feel is missing, as well as any questions you have about the strategic direction of your team. If you have any worries about morale or the growth of the company as a whole, they may want to know.
It's also worth briefly mentioning where you see your role at the company going in the future. Do you want to become a technical lead? Or move into management? Or be considered for a new greenfield project? While your manager is probably best positioned to make these a reality, it's good if your name is known to other senior leaders too so that you're in their minds when these things do become available.
Thanks so much for this 5*. I think your suggestions are very relevant and well-articulated. I just enumerated some discussion topics, keeping these points in mind.
