Physical Product/UX Recruiter Faux Pas

Hello all, I’ve been trying for the longest time to snag an interview with Microsoft, and today they finally reached out to me. Better yet, it’s for their HoloLens product. However, it seems I’m running into a hiccup. The recruiter emailed me back and said: “I think I may have overlooked some details on your resume. Could you confirm your experience to be more physical product or UI/UX related?” I’m very sure he’s referring to the fact that I don’t have a “physical product” based resume or portfolio track. But, technically, HoloLens interacts with the user and world around you digitally. I have tons of non-professional (resume based) background with various 3D applications, Unity and FUI work. How should I respond to him that would still keep me in the running for the position?

What did you apply for? A HW related PM role or SW PM?

UX Product Designer for HoloLens. Digital UI applications for the physical hardware product. Not for crafting the creation of a physical product.

I would be straight forward then and say yes to the UI UX area for similar applications. If by chance your product was integrated on a physical HW product, lead with that if true. HW products focus more on CMF and component interoperability if you wanna look into those topics.

Ok good to know. That’s exactly what I did. Thanks for the swift reply.

UPDATE: So I didn’t get the interview. After more probing, they wanted a physical product designer that had day-to-day experience in SolidWorks and Catia. None of that was mention in the JD, as the whole thing read like a Digital Product Designer. The recruiter apologized, and even referred me to other recruiters in the digital product space. No win, but good knowledge. Redmond = Software, Mountain View = hardware.
