Will Lyft survive?

Hey Lyft employees, I have an interview opportunity @ Lyft. Would appreciate some insights from you about the future of the company. The stock has taken a nosedive. Uber has its own problems, but it is bigger, more international, has diversification in other areas like Eats, freight, etc. Waymo is going to start self driving taxis soon. Alphabet has a massive war chest. What unique advantages does Lyft have that will make it sustain the ensuing price war? As a customer, I want Lyft to survive, but don't see a bright future to be honest. Any insights?

Waymo will be partnering with Lyft, using GM fleet... that's how Lyft would survive, in the meantime Uber will be bleeding money on all bets due to their di-worsification

ZFCU53, thanks for judging that I'm not the sharpest tool. You have just been very negative about the company without any details. It's obvious that you were fired/ weren't welcome there, etc. Whatever it is, i don't care. Not going to feed the troll. Wish you all the best.

Thanks. What are some of the dysfunctional things? Reviews from engineers on Glassdoor seem alright. Granted some may be fake ones from HR. But there might be some genuine ones as well

Attrition is high and half the staff are completely unresponsive, presumably interviewing or resting and vesting. The other half are pursuing territorial landgrabs, going to meetings to establish their project ownership at the manager level and conducting large scale reorgs almost monthly at the director/executive level.

So, people at Lyft in general aren't aware of long term success chances?
      Oct 10
    • Most of us believe in the long term even mid term success. The thing is our fate is in investors hand. The stock price right now shut a lot of people off. People came from Google Facebook to join us and lost tons of money because of the stock drop so some of them lost faith.

We are very confused and scared although I am still cautiously optimistic about the company.

Thanks for sharing. What makes one believe in mid/ long term success of Lyft? How will it distinguish itself from Uber and Waymo?
      Oct 10
    • We already have path to profability based on the most recent earnings. The market is fairly large, Uber and Lyft combined only contributes to 1% of miles traveled in the u.s.
The market is big enough for two players just like Verizon, ATT.

Lyft strategy is laser focusing on multimodal transportation and I do believe if we can grab even a small fraction of the market, revenue and profit will follow.

AV is far away, having a platform ready is a huge advantage. I don't have good understanding so can't comment much on AV world. But Lyft already works with multiple AV companies including waymo.

The strength of Lyft is that it has partnered with many big companies for business travel. The product and marketing team at Lyft seems to be doing a solid job. Engineers are dumb leetcoders everywhere as usual, can't expect much from them.

Building partnerships is good, but not a strategy that can be defended. Uber and Waymo can quite easily do that too

Uber can't do the partnership with Waymo after spending a ton of money on AV themselves, the investors will grill them alive, it's was the same reason Nokia didn't do Android phones because they spent a ton of money on Ovi Maps...back in 2007

      OP
I'm not suggesting that Uber will partner with Waymo. I'm suggesting that they could partner with travel companies as the poster above mentioned. Therefore, Lyft has no sustainable advantage

Only hear tons of complaints about Airbnb and Lyft from friends that work at both. Looking at LinkedIn insights both have an insanely high attrition rate. Would stay away from both no matter how much cash they try and throw.

Probably not long term, but for job hunting it’s interesting to see what companies are bleeding talent and where they are going, while also seeing where companies are hiring from.

Last I checked Airbnb attrition was 22% and Lyft was high teens (huge red flag for me). I advise jumping on a rising ship not a sinking one, or at best stagnant one. Companies in growth stage and doing well often see low single digit attrition because their employees are excited to be there and the work is fulfilling.

Not really sure, I think it’s part of their recruiter subscription. One of my roommates is in recruiting and they let me use it.

Gotta say, everything you said about Uber will actually make it fail faster. The bigger you are the harder you fall. Uber requires more cash to operate.

    Also, I only take Lyft.

Uber has a vision to become the transportation and logistics company. They have other options if there's a price war in ride sharing business. Lyft has no moat to defend. I want Lyft to succeed, But can't see how

Just go through the process and see if you get an offer and decide what you want to do then, no point in trying to figure everything out now. Mid/Long term Lyft should do fine barring any unforced errors from the management

Ride share industry will continue to survive. There is definitely a demand. Consumers prefer it over crappy, rigged, medallion based taxi system. It's just not apparent if Waymo, Uber and Lyft can all exist and be profitable
