most of the recruiters, professionals in the field, and fb groups mention that 60-70% of hires come from referrals. To get referrals, what has worked for you? so atleast resume is seen, maybe the person has a chance of getting a interview, or even being hired. Sometimes I see people that —have negative connotations around referrals. They think why should I help you? I’ve worked hard to get here, and you should go thru the same process. Or others don’t know the person at all, so its difficult to guage their skillset & exp; which is a valid point. these are the approaches that I’ve seen or done. 1. Cold emailing, meeting for coffee, and building a professional relationship? (This takes a lot of time & sometimes the position gets filled in the process) 2. Asking randomly on FB groups, Blind, or LinkedIn? or asking friends/people within LinkedIn network. previous TC 65k
Just be good at what you do. I have zero problems referring people who I think will add value, but I would never refer someone I couldn’t actually vouch for.
Thanks SpaceX! How do you determine who you can vouch for? If you don’t know them personally?
I would never refer someone that I don’t know at least a little bit.
Do #1 type stuff - but not when the job is posted. You need to do it long before. You may even hear about the job before it gets posted. Once it is on online you are probably too late. Point is - networking isn't something you do when when you see a job, it is something you do every day.
Exactly this. Build networking relationships always so that you can ask for and GIVE help when needed.
Interesting. Good way to think about it. Thanks Intel. What are some things that you chat about while networking? Aside from their career and work life. I always hit this silence at times when I run out of things I ask or if the other person gives short answers.
I rely on cold calls. Find someone shoot a blind email. If they reply get on a call. Follow up after a month or two
Good idea! Thanks
70% from referrals for external hires?? Wow.. But to answer your question, I had a lot of luck in Barnes and Noble Starbucks getting job offers lol. Happened 3x at random , also friends. LinkedIn has recruiters always looking for people.
Yes! I know huge number but it’s true.
