[Serious] Feeling dejected after seeing the compensations posted here

Hi, I’m curious to know if anyone else feels slightly dejected after reading these amazing compensation packages that people post about here. I’ve always been a competitive person be it sports, advancing my skills, etc so I mostly feel motivated by watching others succeed. I think I make a decent salary and try to save close to 30% of it but I am not sure what else can I do to achieve what some people here have. How do you keep yourself motivated and remove this element of comparing yourself with others?

[Serious] TC?

Are you from Bay area?

F5 Networks throwaw_ay OP Jul 17, 2019

Yes. I am.

Trimble tinkldiges Jul 17, 2019

Okay nevermind. Was going to say that if you are not from the bay area then don't pay attention to the compensations mentioned on blind.

You’re experiencing the typical social media depression. My best advice would be to delete Blind from your phone. Just like Facebook or Instagram, you’ll only hear about people proud of their compensation, likely the top ones, and you won’t hear about people with average comps. Additionally most of the high compensations posted here are due to increases in stock prices, wait for the next market crash when everyone will have cheap income and no employers will shell out RSUs.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. You’re right. I wasn’t looking at the bigger picture. Historically, I’ve always aspired to be the best version of myself but I guess even my best version will fall short compared to some people. I’m going to try and limit the time that I spend on this app as some things here are actually useful.

TC != talent. To convince your competitive self. Social media is pure evil, once you’re done here(got the job, similar such) gtfo. Once you’re comfortable enough, High TC is only good if you have high ambitions(like $2M vacation home, etc) and you need to put up with the stuff that comes with it.

I have felt like this before but you have to understand that everyone is different and comes from different backgrounds. There are always going to be people that make more than you as well as people who make less than you. Obviously you need a certain amount to live but if you’re making 200 vs 500, maybe you’re not making 500 but at 200 you’re already better than 99% of the U.S. population. Coming from someone with “high” TC I can tell you that it doesn’t define you as a person. There’s a lot of shitty people with high TC who hate their lives. Everyone is on their own road in this life and as long as basic needs are covered it’s about doing good, helping family/others if possible, and driving impact. Just my opinion.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I agree with you, I’m not looking at the complete picture here and need to zoom out and celebrate some of the things that I’ve achieved that I didn’t think was possible.

I spent my childhood and teenage in absolute poverty and I can't believe anybody says "200 vs. 500" doesn't make a huge difference. I do see the difference: With 500 I save more so my future is secured with a higher probability than with 200. When I lived my poverty life, I always thought "at least I'm alive", but I always dreamed about a life that I wouldn't need to run for basics in it. It bothered me a lot when I used to see my friends playing games and traveling the world, but I couldn't because I didn't have the money. There's always a fear inside me of going back to that hell life. I can't stop it.

"Competitive at sports" lol

Trimble tinkldiges Jul 17, 2019

What's to lol about that?

Maybe the problem is you don’t enjoy your time enough at work so you feel like your compensation needs to be higher to make up for it. Awhile back, I took a considerable pay cut from a big company to work at a startup I found interesting and I never looked back. Was much happier and I made the money work. People enjoy their lives with a quarter of what a typical tech employee makes.

If are really as competitive as you say, Get leetcoding and interview. You know which company pay highest and how much they can pay. I use this app for motivation not for depression.

Microsoft cD3iPh Jul 17, 2019

If you’re going to be competitive, then you need the skills to back it up and that includes pursuing better opportunities and negotiation skills. If you don’t find the TC numbers motivating and making you willing to make changes to achieve them, then you’re actually not a competitive person you’re just a jealous person.

I did until I saw how much people are paying for housing in the Bay Area and realized I make more money than they do even though my TC is way less.

Dell LUHV04 Jul 18, 2019

This is something that I will not fathom either. If someone is getting paid 500k , how difficult is it to own a house worth 1.5 million ?

Pinger create💻 Jul 18, 2019

@Dell what I see in that case is double income maybe $200k + $250k and buying a house with around 5 YOE. It's not financially stressful, but if you take the mortgage payment, add in 2 cars (1 is luxury), and then have kids and daycare costs added soon after, there is only 10-35% of income left over to save. The couple has to choose between retirement savings (mega backdoor Roth) and down payment savings. The house is in San Jose not MV. The mortgage is $1M and could go underwater.
