2 YOE before joining Google as L3. How long to stay?

I've lost the sheen of a new grad but finally managed to join Google. They refused to hire me at L4 though. Is promo at Google hard? I've already lost 2 years of my career since I'm pretty much on the same starting line as a new grad. Maybe it's better for my TC to just work a few years and then get hired elsewhere for L5 equivalent and more TC? Has anyone else been in a similar boat? TC: 185 + 20 sign-on

Work hard for a year and you'll get promoted. It's totally possible.

What kind of projects/impact you have created in your 2 years that you expect them to hire you as L4 ? Don’t get me wrong, I am just trying to assess if your 2 YOE is really lost or gained ! As for being in the same boat - Well there will be a hell lot L3’s with more YOE than you!

I was working at a medium sized silicon valley company that actually had a pretty sophisticated stack, but Google doesn't recognize work experience at non-FANG companies I guess. I got put on a lot of debugging work which was difficult but non-promotable (since they all ended up being subtle changes with not enough "impact" aka lines of code), so I left and went to Google.

2 years in the broad perspective of your career isnt too much, especially early on. Congrats on joining Google! Dont make this an ego problem and dont keep assuming that you’re worse than other L3 or L4’s. Trust me, they wouldnt have hired you at all if they didnt wanna see you in the company. Keep working hard

Thanks! I guess I was a bit too caught up comparing myself to my friends, who are all rather successful already. You're right that I should just live my life, and just focus, learn, and do a good job first.

@who u. A lot of people do end up joining as l3. But think about it this way if you’re l3 at google now at 2 years you’re likely going to jump up faster than others. I’ve seen lots of really experienced people get l4s at google (and elsewhere) at 9+ years of experience.

not wasted, you gained skills and TC is higher than fresh grad L4
