2 yrs left on H1B - safe to switch companies?

I have I140 under eb3(no US masters)...got a little more than 2 yrs on my H1B. Is it safe to switch companies at this stage? Till what time will it be safe to do so without risk of not getting a new I140 on time thereby risking H1B extension? clarification : as per my understanidng, eventhough one has I140 from current company, when the person switches to new company, s/he will have to go through the PERM process. when the PERM process is in progress, its as good as the person not having I140. Once the PERM process, completes, s/he has the option to use I140 from their old company, provided the old company has not withdrawn (they are within their limits to do so). Also, at times, USCIS would decide that the new job role is totally different from the old one and mandate applying for a new I140. given all these complications, I thought it would be prudent to have a plan whose timelines accomodate a new I140 as well when switching

Confused about your question: if you already have i140, then you can switch anytime.

Once you stay with the company who filed ur first i140 for 6 months after i140 approval, that i140 is yours. You can switch companies and get ur visa extended beyond 6 years with that. You will need to worry about perm and i140 only when ur priority date is current.

I think OP meant, if he/she cannot use 140 from previous company (also curious how common this is?) for extension and have to get a new one in new company.

You can switch anytime as long as your I140 is approved and valid.
