A bootcamp now has partnered with Amazon to create a pipeline to L4 Backend SWEs at Amazon. These people will generally not have CS degrees. My prediction is that this will push wages down and make hiring abroad from India less incentivized. For reference: https://twitter.com/austen/status/1381952098900774919?s=21 Thoughts? I feel like this will make the culture at amazon even worse tbh.
After churn and burn, need more influx who dream( aka desperate) and willing to sweat
Doesn’t Amazon already do something like this with Amazon Technical Academy?
It's the same thing but more expanded now
LinkedIn and my previous company had a hiring pipeline for hiring bootcamp/“unconventional” grads. I think it’s a good way to hire female/Latinos/black/ other underrepresented demographics. I think some of the hires are super motivated and indistinguishable from CS grads.
I havent met many bootcamp grads that were indistinguishable or better than an average university grad. Seen many self taught programmers who were just as good or better than the average university grad though.
Yeah, definitely on average university grads seem to be higher caliber than bootcamp grads, but there’s exceptions to every rule and I’ve worked with some really great high quality software engineer bootcamp grads
I don't get the hate tbh. It's not like a bootcamp which teaches hello world in JS or whatever and calls it a day. They're gonna teach them proper coding, DS/algos, OOP...that's sufficient right? The proofs we did in our finite automata courses in CS or whatever don't really matter for our jobs. I see this as an opportunity to elevate people from their previous positions
“will be eligible to apply for Amazon’s SDE1 role without needing a degree of any kind” Cant anyone already apply? Doesn’t seem like it’s a free pass to a job

So it's PIP fodder?
Seems like every new L4/5 will have to worry about PIP even more now
