New grad offers. TC is roughly the same (~170k yearly if I distribute signing bonus across 4 years) Would be on an AWS storage team, not a super mature team so lots of feature work left to do but typical AWS WLB, pressure, and bad ops load. Things move fast, so lots of learning and exposure to the service as a whole, lots of opportunities to take ownership and drive important features. I can (and have) performed really well at AWS but the constant pressure can (and has) made me miserable. Don’t know Bloomberg team (until after bootcamp), but should be great WLB and twice as much vacation time. I wouldn’t mind going into HFT after if possible.
Obviously Amazon. After all its FAANG or FAAMG. Also, I am not sure how much you will learn about technology at Bloomberg. A huge percentage of Google employees are from Microsoft or Amazon
Just directly go Bloomberg. Amazon has bunch of bad managers and you’re playing lottos
I’m moving to greener pastures at Bloomberg with a 20% TC bump. I want to enjoy my life with good WLB and good pay. I was in Amazon NYC and heard the AWS NYC team worked crazy hours. Having said that, you will probably learn and grow more as an engineer at Amazon, so choose what you are prioritizing.
Amazon. You'll learn more, it's better for the resume, it has more upwards trajectory, and working at Bloomberg is absolutely meaningless for HFT.
Amazon, but change your team once you get in. Bloomberg upper limit is too low. I consider moving to Bloomberg is a downgrade for my career
I don’t find anything outside of AWS but in NYC to be interesting, and I won’t move out of NYC. AWS NYC has a small presence so there aren’t many options. I wouldn’t stay for longer than two years at BBG.
yeah trying to grow a tech career in nyc is a major mistake, but good luck
Spreading out TC over 4 years may not be the correct comparison because you may be promoted in 2 years in both the companies. Compare offers for only the first 2 years. Having said that, choose a team/company which interests you more.
Amazon has better name brand and growth.
Bloomberg Terminal is an amazing piece of software if you aspire to trade on the side.
Yeah you can ignore this point OP. Almost no one I know at the company uses terminal for anything with trading. Also, BBG has lot of trading restrictions like you can't trade derivatives or sell any stock for profit unless you hold it for 30 days.
Sure in terms of functionality its the de facto standard across the industry but the user experience leaves a lot of be desired
Amazon because at Bloomberg you will hit the max comp of 260-270k TC even after 10-15 yrs with them because they don't have stocks. Try for the moon when you are young.
Joined Bloomberg out of school with MSFT and AMZN offers and I don’t regret it. It hasn’t closed any doors and maybe even opened more than AMZN would’ve. I constantly get spammed for interviews at hedge funds and many ex Bloombergers move to FB and Goog. Great place to spend the first 1-3 years of career IMO
why over msft? how is wlb and growth?
MSFT was for Seattle and I wanted NYC. WLB is amazing, growth is highly team dependent like always
